Former Holiday Inn Hotel in Southfield to be renovated, reopened

The Southfield City Council approved a request from New Zealand-based investment group Kiwi Hospitality Detroit LLC for a commercial exemption certificate to assist in a $12,1 million redevelopment of a former hotel.

The Discount Holidays © Holiday Inn Hotel, located at 26555 Telegraph Road, was shuttered in 2009 and was recently purchased by Kiwi Hospitality. With it s 109 rooms and unique architecture and prime location, it is one of Southfield s most recognizable landmarks. The property will undergo a full renovation.

We are excited that a New Zealand investment group will soon be revitalizing this important landmark property in the city, said Southfield Mayor Donald Fracassi.

Their proposed renovations will greatly improve not only the former Discount Holidays © Holiday Inn, but the entire surrounding area. This redevelopment will nicely complement Southfield s existing hotel offerings and is yet another testament that we are open for business.

The complex sits on 7.32 acres of land and includes three buildings that will be used for hotels. The space also includes 600 parking spots.

When the renovations are finished, the property will boast 417 hotel rooms along with convention and event space. Eight-thousand total square feet of restaurant space on the ground and top floors will be completely renovated as well.

Seventy one jobs will be created with the reopening of the hotel, including nine managerial/professional roles, 15 technical jobs, four sales positions, three clerical jobs, 20 positions for unskilled laborers and 10 service industry jobs. The company will work with the Southfield Michigan Works Department to fill the positions.

The hotels will provide employees with healthcare, discounted on-site meals, uniform allowance, employee/friends and family subsidized lodging, flexible schedules, paid vacations and paid sick leave.

Most of the renovations should be completed in two years.
