Here’s our list of the most exciting bikes for you to save up for in 2016

As ever there are no shortage of new bikes for you to dream about ahead of next season. All the big brands have released something or other, and there s a decent smattering of aero bikes, lightweight bikes, endurance bikes, and disc brake road bikes; something for everyone.

In fact there are too many new models to get through all of them, so here s our pick of the five most exciting bikes for 2016.

Scott Foil

The new Scott Foil is a little faster and a lot more comfortable than its predecessor

The new Scott Foil was launched back in June2, and we were instantly impressed by this new aero offering after just a couple of rides. Scott is claiming small improvements in stiffness and aerodynamics that will save you six watts when travelling at 45kmh, but the big change over the old Foil is the vastly more comfortable ride, 89% more comfortable if you take Scott s word for it.

The bike you see above is the Scott Foil 10, a bike that sits around the mid-point of the range. This means it comes with Shimano Ultegra Di2 grouspet and in-house Syncros wheels, although you don t get the beautifully integrated bar and stem used on the more expensive models

Cervelo R3 Disc

The Cervelo R3 Disc is Cervelo s first entry into the disc market

Only announced last week, the brand new Cervelo R3 Disc4 is the first entry into the disc brake road bike market from Cervelo. As you d expect from the name, the new bike takes a number of features from the existing R3, with the tube shapes and the geometry remaining the same.

However there have been a number of notable changes. The fork and rear stays have both been redesigned and beefed up to cope with the torque of disc brakes. Through the use of a custom FSA SL-K chainset to keep a straight chainline, Cervelo has also managed to stick with the same short 405mm chainstays as seen on the rim brake version, despite the wider hub needed for disc brakes, something that should maintain the sharp handling that the existing R3 is renowned for.

Focus Izalco Max Disc

The Focus Izalco Max is one of the lightest disc bikes around

Having attached discs to its Cayo endurance bike6 last year, Focus is a slightly more established name in the disc market than Cervelo, but the new Izalco Max Disc7 is the first time it has attempted to put them on a lightweight bike.

In fact with a 54cm frame weighing a claimed 790g, Focus reckons that its bike is the lightest disc road bike currently on the market. With lightweight kit, this should make it possible to put a complete bike together for as little as 5.5kg, despite Focus having to beef up the fork and stays to deal with the strain of flat mount calipers.

Ridley Fenix SL

The Ridley Fenix SL is an endurance bike with Flemish cobbles in its DNA

While the other exciting bikes all have a racy feel to them, the Ridley Fenix SL9 is a new endurance model which should appeal to riders who love nothing more than racking up the miles, even over the dodgy road surfaces that Britain is sure to throw at all of us over the coming months.

That said, although Ridley has concetrated on making this bike as comfortable as possible with reduced diameter 27.2mm seat tube and slender seatstays, this still looks like a bike that can be ridden fast when it needs to be. Indeed Andre Greipel rode one in the Tour of Flanders11, and it comes with a slender front profile for improved aerodynamics and diamond shaped down tube for improved stiffness.

Cannondale SuperSix EVO Hi-Mod

Cannondale has somehow managed to slim down its already skinny SuperSix EVO Hi-Mod

Look closely, and you might be able to spot that this is a new SuperSix EVO model for 201612. Like the also-new Canyon Ultimate CF SLX13, the SuperSix has received an aero makeover, with truncated aero profile tubing and a reduced frontal area which Cannondale claims will save you six watts over the old model.

However what s most impressive is that Cannondale has managed to make this bike even lighter than its predecessor. The combined weight of the frame, fork, seatpost, and headset is 67g less than on the old model, meaning that the lightest Black Inc.

production model is only 5.8kg.
