Holiday hell passengers blast Thomson after flight to Manchester is delayed …

Angry holidaymakers have hit out after a flight to Manchester Airport from Menorca was delayed for 13 hours. Families including babies and young children were forced to spend the night at Mahon Airport and one upset traveller told how they were treated like unattended baggage . Louise Brown, from Offerton, Stockport, said some families were offered overnight accommodation in apartments, but they were totally unsuitable. She was returning from a week-long Discount Holidays © holiday with husband Stephen and their children, Darcy, three, and 12-month-old Isaac.

Louise, a nurse at Stepping Hill Hospital who used to work as a travel agent, blasted the tour operator over its communication and organisation .

She said the delay was caused partly by an emergency landing in the early hours of Saturday at Cardiff Airport, but the firm knew in advance that there would be problems. The flight, TOM 2657 with around 300 holidaymakers on board, should have taken off from Spain at 7.30pm on Saturday night. Louise said passengers were initially told of a 40 minute delay before the flight was cancelled at around 11.45pm. It landed in Manchester at 10.10am on Sunday.

She said: We had a fabulous Discount Holidays © holiday but this was just a nightmare. They treated us like unattended baggage. We were dumped at the airport and that was it. We will be making an official complaint. It is just a total lack of communication and organisation. Louise said there were no blankets or pillows provided. The family were selected to be taken to a hotel for the night because they had young children, but Louise said they were driven to unsuitable apartments on the other side of the island then driven back to the airport because the owners had no knowledge that they were arriving.

She added: The staff on reception didn t know anything about it. Apparently there was going to be a triathlon the following day and there were road closures so they couldn t guarantee they could get us back to the airport. We were given eight Euros each and eventually some baby milk and nappies were handed round. I had no sleep at all. It was just appalling really.

It was the most horrible thing I have ever been through.

People were not being told what was going on. Louise sent a series of messages through Facebook to Thomson Holidays, but she said her calls and telephone messages went unanswered. Thomson said the flight was one of a number of planes to be delayed or cancelled because of a knock-on effect following the emergency landing at Cardiff.

The company has been contacted for a comment. A spokesperson for the company said: “We would like to apologise for the inconvenience caused to customers travelling on flight TOM2657 from Mahon to Manchester Airport.

“The aircraft operating this flight was delayed due to mandatory crew rest restrictions. An alternative aircraft was sourced as quickly as possible and we did all we could to assist our customers at Mahon airport.

“Customers are now back in the UK after the aircraft landed at Manchester airport at 10.12 (UK time) on Sunday 20 September.

We would like to reassure customers that delays of this nature are extremely rare.”
