Luxury Newcastle hotel Crowne Plaza in the Stephenson Quarter opens for business

Newcastle s newest luxury1 hotel has quietly opened its doors in a milestone step forward for the 200m development of the Stephenson Quarter.

The Crowne Plaza Newcastle has welcomed its first guests ahead of the official first day of trading next week and more than two years after developer Clouston Group first instructed contractors to start work on the 251-bed hotel. The hotel s GIN Bar and Hawthorn Restaurant is also open for business, while bookings for conferences and events have already been made well into 2017. The seven-storey hotel on Hawthorn Square, Forth Street, has been built with 20,000 tonnes of concrete, 185 copper panels and 7,000 metres of timber panelling.

The glass atrium at the hotel s reception has been constructed with 114 panes of glass alone. Standing at over 25m high, it provides panoramic views of the city from all levels of the hotel. The final stages of preparing the hotel ahead of opening to the public saw general manager Andrew Fox orchestrate the mammoth task of completing the plush interior, including moving in 1,500 chairs, 900 cushions, 529 mirrors, 300 pieces of art, 41 birch tree trunks and 14 copper tables.

Michelle Percy, director at Clouston Group, said the group had been heavily involved in every stage of the hotel s development

As this has been our first hotel project we have pored over every aspect, from construction through to choosing colours, soft furnishings and furniture even sitting on sofas to test them before buying.

It s easy to look at furniture online so at one point I found myself meeting someone in a car park at York station, sitting on chairs for the bar to look at them properly, take measurements and then get back on a train to Newcastle to put an order in.

That demonstrates the kind of people we are. I want it to be perfect. Mr Fox said: The operational team and I have been working behind the scenes on site for over six months and have witnessed the amazing transformation from a building site to a luxury hotel.

We ve already welcomed our first guests and it s an absolute pleasure to see people enjoying the facilities.

It s an exciting time to be opening our doors as we prepare to host guests for huge sporting events such as the Great North Run on Sunday and then the Rugby World Cup 2015 in October.

We re also gearing up for Christmas and are busy taking party bookings and planning our festive menus and entertainment packages.

We re off to a fantastic start with a steady stream of customers for both our bedrooms and conference facilities and I m looking forward to hosting many more over the coming months.
