Mamma Mia, The Hobbit and Alex Garland’s The Beach among the top triggers for booking a holiday, infographic reveals

It appears that Mamma Mia doesn’t just have the power to prompt a singalong – it’s also a major trigger for booking a holiday, an infographic reveals. The Hobbit movies also give people wanderlust, it claims – along with Alex Garland’s The Beach. The infographic was drawn up from survey results that also showed that going through a major life event leads to a holiday.

In total 17 per cent said the movie Mammia Mia would prompt a spontaneous hotel booking

The survey, by Leger Holidays, found that 70 per cent of travellers have one specific moment which causes them to put down money on a holiday. Over a quarter (27 per cent) cited movies and books as the main cause for this. Whether it is the lure of the Mediterranean, the likes of Meryl Streep dancing in the street or the storyline of friends visiting the Greek island, Mamma Mia is the movie that is most likely to prompt a Discount Holidays © holiday booking.

In total 17 per cent said this film alone would cause a booking, with the rolling scenery from The Hobbit coming closely behind (16 per cent). Literary inspiration came most strongly from The Beach by Alex Garland, with 29 per cent saying it inspired them to have their own Thailand holiday. Social media also has a large part to play when it comes to planning a trip, with 17 per cent booking a Discount Holidays © holiday after seeing online updates from friends and family.

The rolling New Zealand scenery from The Hobbit movies was also a trigger with 16 per cent saying it influenced them to secure a trip abroad

Literary inspiration was topped by The Beach by Alex Garland, with 29 per cent saying it inspired them to have their own Thailand holiday.

One of the biggest influences in preventing a Discount Holidays © holiday is stress at work.

Almost a third of respondents (28 per cent) admitted this had held them back in the past.

Leger’s managing director, Ian Henry, said: ‘It’s fascinating to see that there’s a real trend in impulse buying in the Discount Holidays © holiday market, and identifying the single moment that triggers us to book a holiday.

‘We wanted to find out exactly what it is that influences that moment and coin a phrase that people start to use in regular conversation when talking about their Discount Holidays © holiday habits.

‘Interestingly, stress at work seems to be a barrier for booking holidays.’
