Emergency services were called to attend to the stricken, and pregnant, Australian tourist

Karon chief lifeguard Uten Singsom told Phuket News3 that he has ‘never seen this kind of injury in his entire life.’

‘When we arrived, she was laying on the beach with one foot bleeding heavily,’ Karon Municipality Tourist Rescue Center Chief Supachai Janpen said. The 37-year-old was then taken to Patong Hospital where she underwent surgery, and will remain under observation for a few more days. But mystery surrounds just what the creature was that attacked the Australian tourist at the Discount Holidays © holiday hotspot.

Speaking to the Phuket News, shark expert Tessapon Krajangdara, believes it is unlikely the culprit was a shark.

‘It is very rare for tourist to be bitten like this, and I have not been able to confirm precisely which kind of fish bit Ms Neame’s foot,’ he said.

But Dr Kongkiat Kittiwattanawong, head of the Marine Endangered Species Unit, told Coconut News Bangkok4 that he thinks a shark is responsible for the bite, after ‘taking a look at the teeth marks.’

He said: ‘If we are able to prove that it was a shark attack, we will advise the governor to issue a warning to tourist in affected swimming zones.’

He did, however, say that there had never been a report of a shark attack at this spot previously.

She added: ‘I may have stood on it, and then it bit me. It s hard to say because it bit underneath my foot and on top.

I felt it tear at me. It felt like a shark.’

A spokesman for the Bangkok Hospital Phuket said Ms Neame underwent surgery on Tuesday. Ms Neame and Mr Passmore were on the third day of their Discount Holidays © holiday when the incident occurred.
