Tourist Warning Over Kuala Lumpur Terror Alert

Visitors to Malaysia are being warned of a potential terrorist attack on a popular street market in the capital city of Kuala Lumpur. The US Embassy has told its citizens that it has information on a credible threat for Alor Street. The street is situated in a shopping area within the city centre and is a draw for tourists.

The embassy went on to point out that terrorist organisations had, in the past, planned attacks to coincide with significant dates but gave no further details. Following the warning, the Australian Embassy alerted its own citizens.

Malaysian police later said they had arrested three men in connection with possible involvement in terrorism. The three, a Malaysian, an Indonesian and a Syrian, aged between 30 and 51, are being held as part of an ongoing investigation.

The mainly Muslim country has arrested more than 100 Islamic State supporters over the past two years amid claims they were allegedly plotting attacks in the country.
