Which European cities offer the best value for a holiday tipple or two?

City breaks are now Brits favourite type of Discount Holidays © holiday with 54% of us heading abroad on one in the last 12 months. And while, of course, we ll soak up the local culture, sights and food, many tourists will also enjoy relaxing with a few drinks1 too. So where s the best value in Europe for a refreshing chilled beer in the sunshine, a celebration glass of sparkling wine or a pre-dinner G&T?

Research from Post Office Travel Money2 out today shows the east costs least for Brits who fancy a tipple on a city break3. It looked at the cost of 12 types of alcoholic drinks ranging from beer and wine to cocktails and spirits and added them up to create a booze barometer total.

Prague leads the way with the complete round coming in at 28.74. The Czech favourite has knocked Budapest ( 30.20) off top spot in last year s report with the Hungarian capital sliding to second place.

Prague s prices are also less than half those in city break hotspots Barcelona ( 60.56), London ( 60.70), Rome ( 61.77) and Dublin ( 62.88). Other Eastern European cities offering great value at the bar are Krakow ( 33.82), Riga ( 49.95) and Tallinn ( 53.11) making up the top five places.

Majorca s classy capital Palma ( 56.72) emerged as the cheapest city in Western Europe in sixth place, just ahead of hip Berlin ( 57.54) and ever-popular Amsterdam ( 58.14). A Post Office spokesman said: Our research shows that the cost of a special celebration evening out can vary
dramatically, depending on your choice of drink and which city you visit.

Check out prices before booking a city break because some advance homework can help to ensure the bar bill doesn t bust the celebration budget.

He added: Savvy travellers are obviously switching on to the great value in cities like Prague, Budapest and Krakow, as well as to the low air fares available.

And don t forget the bubbly…

As part of its research of a total of 16 cities, Post Office Travel Money also checked the cost of a bottle of celebratory champagne in bars in popular tourist areas.

The 10 lowest prices are.
