England vs Wales at Euro 2016: Can I pull a sickie?

England kicked off their Euro 2016 campaign with a 1-1 draw with Russia on Saturday night – leaving many a fan to turn their attentions to the forthcoming clash with Wales. Ever since the Three Lions drew Gareth Bale and co in the European Championships draw, plenty have dismayed at the revelation that the two Home Nations are set to do battle at 2pm on a Thursday afternoon. Roy Hodgson may view the match as a must-win fixture, given Wales’ opening victory over Slovakia, but fans of both nations are set to be in for a rough and tense 90 minutes on June 16.

Chained to the office and wearing a tie watching the match alongside Barbara from accounts is hardly the most appetising environment for watching such a titanic clash. So, is this the moment to cash in your months of good health and pull a sickie? We checked what you can (legally) get away with.

Can I make my boss give me time off?

No, unfortunately. You can (legally) get the time off by requesting a holiday, different shifts or starting earlier than normal to finish up in time for kick-off, though.

Your boss is required, by law, to consider a genuine request for flexible working.

You don’t even have to tell your boss why you’re ill, by law. But remember that your boss will probably take a dim view of getting a call on Thursday morning from you or a sick colleague, muttering something about catching “Euro-itis” overnight.

I can get my boss to screen the game if my office has a TV, can’t I?
