Brits may be denied entry into European countries without a visa

It s been reported that the European Commission are reportedly considering the introduction of a visa programme to the Schengen zone, which is made up of 26 European countries. It s thought the new visa operation could work the same way as America. Meaning visitors from outside the zone would need to apply for a visa before visiting.

Countries within the Schengen area include Greece, Spain, France, Italy and Portugal.

Brits are currently able to enter these countries with just their British passport. But if the new visa system is introduced, a Discount Holidays © holiday could prove trickier. The EU is reportedly considering tighter security to the borders following terror attacks in France and Belgium.

The Guardian reported that the European Commission is due to unveil draft legislation for the EU travel information and authorisation system (Etias) later this year.

Camino Mortera-Martinez, a research fellow specialising in justice and home affairs at the Centre for European Reform, told the Guardian: In theory UK citizens, as third-country nationals, would certainly be subject to the obligations (of such a scheme).

This will have to be part of the Brexit talks. It will all have to be negotiated. Brits may soon need a visa for entry to certain European countries

He added: “But following the UK s vote in June, it suggests that UK Citizens will require an ETIAS every time we need to travel into the EU area because they will no longer be EU Citizens.

It is important to bear in mind that this is under consultation at this time but it is likely that the ETIAS , will like the US ESTA , have a validity period longer than one visit.

The important issue however for many ordinary families will be that obtaining an ETIAS will attract a cost; let s assume that each individual ETIAS will cost 10.

That cost will add up over the years.

The Express have reached out to the Department for Exiting the European Union for comment.
