It failed to materialise in the Tour de France1, but in the Vuelta a Espa a2 s Lagos de Covadonga summit finish on Monday, fans finally saw the full-on battle they had been waiting for between grand tour stars Chris Froome3 and Colombian Nairo Quintana4. Team Sky s Froome showed a moment of weakness and Movistar s Quintana, showing a riding style that was smooth as silk, powered away. Once Froome rebounded, it became an individual pursuit over the remaining six kilometres to the lake at top.

As it is now, I consider Froome the number one favourite, Quintana said after taking the red jersey and his first Vuelta a Espa a stage win5.

I find it difficult to understand his racing style, but little by little, we are understanding the tricks of his strategy, and we hope to find a way to open even more advantage on him.

Quintana, second twice and third this year in the Tour de France behind Froome, won the stage. He took 31 seconds on Froome, who admitted that he feels the Tour de France, the Olympics and the rest of the season in his legs.

He now leads the overall by 57 seconds over his Movistar team-mate Alejandro Valverde and 58 seconds over Froome going in to the first rest day on Tuesday. Esteban Chaves (Orica-BikeExchange) sits at 2-09 and Alberto Contador (Tinkoff) at 2-54.

It does not immediately look great for Froome, but those wanting the ding-dong must leave Monday s stage content. Froome s superiority and Quintana s failure to show up with his A-game in the Tour de France this July left some bored by the yellow jersey battle. This time around, Quintana appears at his best and Froome at a level below what fans saw in France. Now, Quintana has his first Vuelta a Espa a stage win to add to those from the Tour and Giro, where he won the overall in 2014.

I have always been confident about my capacities, Quintana said.

Sometimes I was better, sometimes not so good, but now I am feeling better than he is, and that fills me with a lot of confidence. More of the same duels should come as Quintana will fight to get every minute possible before starting stage 19, the 37-kilometre time trial in the third week.

I m going to need three minutes when I arrive to the time trial, Quintana said. Froome is still very close, especially when you look at what lies ahead, so we have to keep doing what we ve been doing, to distance him even more.

Bora ready to step-up to WorldTour with signing of Peter Sagan for 2017

The German team are to announce the signing of Sagan imminently, and hope his presence will get the the green light to become a WorldTour team

Bora Ready To Step-up To WorldTour With Signing Of Peter Sagan For 2017

World champion Peter Sagan1 will help German team Bora-Hansgrohe take another step this winter in its slow and steady development. With new star Slovak, whose contract will be announced in the coming week, the team may now enter the WorldTour2 with rights to race every major Classic and Grand Tour.

The UCI, cycling s governing body, allows teams to sign new riders and to announce them as early as August 1 this Monday. The German team will not say, but Sagan has already put ink to paper for two to three years. Sagan s contract, and his 3233 World Ranking points, will make sure Ralph Denk s team goes into the first division or WorldTour in 2017. Of course, the UCI will not make that official until its commission rules later this November or December.

The UCI makes the final decision, but we will present a strong roster along with our budget, Denk said during the Tour de France. I m hoping for a green light. The light should come thanks to Sagan s three Tour de France wins and green jersey4 the fifth in a row for him. This year, he also won the Tour of Flanders5 in the rainbow jersey he took at the 2015 World Championships6.

Along with Sagan, Slovakians Erik Baska, Michael Kolar and Juraj Sagan Peter s brother will join from Tinkoff7. The Russian WorldTour team is closing after its brash owner Oleg Tinkoff decided he had enough with cycling. Its Polish star Rafal Majka8 will make the jump from Tinkoff to Bora as well.

Team Sky9 will say goodbye to Czech Leopold K nig, who joined the team after placing seventh in the Tour de France for Denk s team in 2014.

German Tony Martin10, three-time world time trial champion, is set to join Bora-Hansgrohe from Etixx-Quick-Step.

Bora will add more staff. Inside sources say that Lars Teutenberg will join as a technical expert and Patxi Vila will take a sports director role. Denk s team is based in the south of Germany in Raubling, an hour s drive southeast of Munich, in the Bora kitchen factory. This year, Bora opened a new headquarters and Denk decided to move his team in. He knows the owner Willi Bruckbauer well as they both used to race together.

After his career racing, Denk started a mountain bike team and Ralph Denk Pro Cycling. The management company began with NetApp in 2010, raced the Giro d Italia11 in 2012 and merged with British team Endura in 2013. In 2014, Denk received on of the wildcard invitations in the Tour and helped K nig place seventh.

His next dream of becoming a WorldTour team is about to come true, starting with Sagan and a series of other announcements next week.

Winner and runner-up in last year s Tour de France, Chris Froome1 and Nairo Quintana2, will face off yet again in the six-day Tour de Romandie starting on Tuesday. The race begins with a 4km prologue, before a testing parcours featuring four categorised climbs on stage one prepares the riders for the first summit finish on stage two with the category one ascent to Morgins. Stage three will be a hilly 15.1km time trial ahead of the race s queen stage with three category one climbs, including a daunting summit finish at Villars to cap 173km of racing, while stage five offers something for the sprinters with a flat final ten kilometres following a bumpy opening 100km containing two category three climbs.

Froome finished a disappointing third in last year s race after a lacklustre final stage time trial3, which saw Katusha s Ilnur Zakarin take the overall victory ahead of Simon Spilak and Froome.
