Who is favourite for each cycling event at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games?

The Olympic Games are nearly upon us, so now’s the time to study the form guide to see who could win gold in each and every cycling event

Road cycling

Men s road race

Alejandro Valverde1 (Spain) is the slight favourite in what seems to be a very open race along the roads of Rio de Janeiro. The Movistar2 rider has won virtually everything there is to offer in the world of cycling, but an Olympic gold has always eluded him.

You can get Valverde at 5/1 at Coral, while his nearest rivals are set to be Italy s Vincenzo Nibali (8/1 at Ladbrokes) and Britain s Chris Froome3 (16/1 at Coral.)

For an outside bet, consider Tour of Poland winner Tim Wellens, who is widely available at 33/1.

Women s road race

Anna van der Breggen (Netherlands) and Lizzie Armitstead4 (Great Britain) are virtually neck and neck in the betting stakes ahead of the women s race on August 7. Van der Breggen s best odds are 4/1 at Ladbrokes, while Armitstead is at 5/1 with Bet365. Megan Guarnier (USA) and Marianne Vos5 (Netherlands) aren t far behind in the reckoning, with best odds of 11/2 and 13/2 respectively.

Men s time trial

The broken arm suffered by Tom Dumoulin7 (Netherlands) at the end of the Tour de France8 has set back his Olympic time trial hopes, with the odds-on favourite being replaced by Chris Froome in the betting. Froome s is now odds-on across the board, apart from at Betfred, where he can be backed at evens.

Elsewhere Tony Martin9 (Germany) can be found at 7/1 at Stan James, while Portugal s Nelson Oliveira can be backed at 40/1 after impressing against the clock at the Tour de France.

Women s time trial

Van der Breggen is again the big favourite for the women s time trial, with best odds of 15/8 available at Sky Bet. World champion Linda Villumsen10 (New Zealand) can be backed at 4/1 at Bet365 and Kristin Armstrong (USA) winner of the last two Olympic time trials is 13/2 to make it a hat-trick.

Track cycling

The British quartet of Laura Trott, Elinor Barker, Ciara Horne and Joanna Rowsell-Shand during the women s team pursuit. After a shock fifth place in qualifying, the Brit team rallied to claim bronze.

Men s team pursuit

Great Britain v Australia again11? It looks to be that way, with Sir Bradley Wiggins12 s Team GB squad available at 4/5 to take gold once more. Australia are at 13/8 to repeat their win from the World Championships, with New Zealand (16/1) a long way off in third.

Women s team pursuit

USA and Great Britain look to be the teams expected13 to make the final of the women s event, with the Americans odd-on favourites to take the gold. With Team GB available at 5/2 at Bet365, Australia are a long way out as third favourites at 10/1 in some places.

Men s team sprint

Great Britain aren t looking good to retain their Olympic title, having been off the pace at this year s world championships14. In their place, New Zealand have been making strides and are odds-on to win gold in Rio.

Women s team sprint

China are the team to beat in the women s team sprint, with 1/2 the best you ll be able to back them at. But the rules of the team sprint often mean it s easy to get yourself relegated15, meaning some of the longer shots may be worth a shout. Russia are at second favourites for the gold, followed by Germany some way back.

Men s individual sprint

Jason Kenny (Great Britain) always turns it on in Olympic years and if his World Championship sprint win16 is anything to go by he will be the man to beat in Rio as well. At 7/4 he s favourite to beat the same man he overcame in London in February, Australia s Matthew Glaetzer, who can be backed at 11/4.

Women s individual sprint

Zhong Tianshi (China) and Kristina Vogel (Germany) are the ones to beat in the sprint match races, at 9/4 and 7/2 respectively at Bet365. Britain s Katy Marchant can be found at 40/1 with the same company, while Becky James is at 12/1 with Boyle Sports, but it s not clear which rider will be given the nod for the event.

Who Is Favourite For Each Cycling Event At The Rio 2016 Olympic Games?

Men s Keirin

The men s keirin looks to be one of the most fiercely contested events on the track at these Games, with Joachim Eilers (Germany), Ed Dawkins (New Zealand), Francois Pervis (France) and Kenny (Great Britain) almost level in the betting. Eilers is slight favourite at 11/4 with Kenny available at 4/1,

Women s Keirin

Germany s Kristina Vogel, who won gold at the World Championships in February, enters as slight favourite (7/2) ahead of Australia s Anna Meares (7/2), who won silver to Victoria Pendleton in London four years ago.

Becky James is as long as 9/1 to win gold, but could be a shout for the podium in an each-way bet, having impressed with a bronze medal at the Worlds17.

Men s omnium

For Mark Cavendish18 (Great Britain) to win gold in the omnium he ll have to overcome two-time world champion Fernando Gaviria (Colombia). Gaviria is at 9/4 with Sky Bet, while Cavendish can be backed at 4/1 with Paddy Power.

Women s omnium

Laura Trott is the one to beat as she aims to retain her title from 201219. The Brit is at 10/11 at Paddy Power, with long-term rival Sarah Hammer (USA) at 4/1 and Australian Annette Edmondson at 13/2 with Bet365.

BMX

Who Is Favourite For Each Cycling Event At The Rio 2016 Olympic Games?

Men s

Niek Kimmann (Netherlands) may only be 20, but he s already a BMX world champion and is at 4/1 at many outlets for Olympic gold. Britain s Liam Philips can definitely challenge for gold and is at 7/1 for the win with Boyle Sports.

Women s

Mariana Pajon (Colombia) is favourite to defend her Olympic crown in Rio20. She won the event aged just 20 in London in 2012 and goes into Rio with two more World Championship titles to her name.

Mountain biking

Who Is Favourite For Each Cycling Event At The Rio 2016 Olympic Games?

Men s cross country

Six-time cross country world champion Nino Schurter (Switzerland) is unsurprisingly the bookies favourite for gold in Rio, with odds around the evens mark across the board. Reigning road race world champion Peter Sagan21 (Slovakia) can be found with odds of 9/1 at Bet365 as he makes a rare return to the off-road scene.

Women s cross country

Three-time world champion Annika Langvad (Denmark) is at 11/4 to bring home the gold in Rio ahead of Jolanda Neff (Switzerland).

Former road race world champion Pauline Ferrand-Prevot22 is competing for France and is at 10/1 at Bet 365.

Travel Money Compared: How To Find Best Tourist Exchange Rate On Your Euros And US Dollars

Holidaying abroad in 2016? It’s worth checking out the best exchange rates before booking any flights.

To give you an idea of how much the best exchange rates can fluctuate, take a look at the following Euro to Dollar exchange rates: In February, EUR/USD fluctuated between the lows of 1.0837 and highs of 1.1362. Since the start of 2016 the British Pound (GBP) exchange rate has shed a lot of its value. This has been primarily the result of political uncertainty ahead of the European Union referendum1.

With little known as to the full impact of a British exit from the EU, whether positive or negative, investor confidence has dampened considerably. This can be seen for those buying euros, with the inter-bank pound to euro exchange rate dropping from a best conversion of 1.4409 in July 20152 to around 1.2815 in February. So what difference does this dramatic drop in the British Pound s value make to your Discount Holidays © holiday spending money?

Say you have 500 to exchange into Euro s to spend in Spain. At November s rate of 1.42 your 500 would equate to ‘ 710. At February s rate of 1.28 your 500 is only worth ‘ 640. Here are the latest inter-bank exchange rates (not travel money) for your reference:

On Friday the Australian Dollar to British Pound exchange rate (AUD/GBP) converts at 0.497
3

The GBP to AUD exchange rate converts at 2.014 today.

The live inter-bank GBP-CAD spot rate is quoted as 1.971 today. Today finds the pound to new zealand dollar spot exchange rate priced at 2.163. The GBP to EUR exchange rate converts at 1.288 today.

At time of writing the pound to us dollar exchange rate is quoted at 1.433.

Please note: the FX rates above, updated 19th Feb 2016, will have a commission applied by your typical high street bank. Currency brokers specialise in these type of foreign currency transactions and can save you up to 5% on international payments4 compared to the banks.

Best Euro and Dollar Exchange Rates Behind Us? British Pound Outlook Negative on Political Uncertainty and Low Inflation.

Domestically you will probably enjoy ultra-accommodative interest rates and near-zero inflation, but this does not bode well for the value of the Pound. After a number of domestic data publications have shown that inflation outlook remains tepid and wage growth subdued, the Bank of England (BoE5) will be unlikely to hike the benchmark interest rate any time soon. This could keep the Pound on the back foot which will limit conversion rates.

Compare Pound to Euro Exchange Rate Discount Holidays © Holiday Money

As of 17th Febraury 2016, one of the best rates to buy your euros would surprisingly be via a high street shop.

500 will get you ‘ 626.90 provided by Debenhams6, although this is collection only. For those after a delivery service, the best pound to euro rate we could find was ‘ 623.60 including free delivery.

So when is the best time to take a Discount Holidays © holiday based on the best exchange rates achieved in 2016?

Given that the Pound trade weighting is predicted to remain low for a considerable period, there is no good time to take a Discount Holidays © holiday at present. However, there are a number of economic events on the horizon which could see the Pound fall further, so timing is key. Until more is known regarding the timing of the EU referendum there is no safe time to holiday.

Once the timing of the vote is known it would be prudent to await the result. If the UK votes to remain part of the EU it is likely to be met with a significant Sterling appreciation. It is always worth consulting an economic calendar before booking a holiday. If there is a Bank of England (BoE) policy meeting on the horizon it could be worth awaiting the conclusion.

Any speeches from BoE officials usually impacts the Pound, and data such as Gross Domestic Product or Consumer Prices usually provokes Sterling volatility.

US Discount Holidays © Holiday Planned? Pound to Dollar Exchange Rates have Also Weakened Considerably

Much like the pound to euro conversion, the pound to dollar travel money rate has weakened considerably over the past few months. In November the GBP/USD exchange rate was trending around 1.5289, but in February the GBP/USD conversion rate dropped to around 1.4290. Check our best dollar rate finder here7. Using the same example as above, your 500 spending money would equate to ‘ 760 at November s conversion, but just ‘ 710 at February s.

Whilst this may not seem dramatic, the gap widens considerably the more you wish to transfer. Those who have holidayed in America will know that 500 will not get you very far.

Using a Broker could save you a lot of money even at times when Pound Sterling exchange rates are weak.

Given that the British Pound is forecast to remain undervalued for some time to come, should you avoid taking a Discount Holidays © holiday abroad? No is the answer.

Whilst it would be more prudent to wait for the Pound to appreciate you may be waiting a long time, and there are only so many mini breaks in Cumbria one can withstand. So what should you do? Well it is common practise to use your bank or the post office to exchange your Pounds.

However, this is a mistake. If you use a dedicated, reputable currency broker to exchange funds you will be very likely to be given a far more favourable exchange rate than using your bank or the post office. What s more, most brokers require you to open an account with them which means that it is very easy to top up your spending money quickly should you find your cash running out. This avoids very expensive bank withdrawals.

The bottom line is that you should always consider exchange rates before getting your Discount Holidays © holiday spending money, and using a broker will be far more beneficial than a bank or the post office, and definitely better than the bureau de change.

EUR-USD Exchange Rate: Key Events to Watch out for in 2016

There are certain events which are likely to cause significant movement in the EUR-USD exchange rate, affecting the amount of travel money you receive. Key among these are interest rate hikes by the US Federal Reserve and changes in monetary policy from the European Central Bank. We keep track of these events, so you can always check back to learn about the latest developments affecting currency movements.
