The Interior Ministry in Spain said: The detainee, a Moroccan man resident in Palma, had a close relationship with the terrorist organisation Daesh10 .

He represented a clear threat to national security given that he used the internet to actively convince vulnerable people he had previously selected.

He sent out radical messages directed towards recruiting new jihadists and promoted and facilitated their journeys to zones of conflict so they could join Daesh11 s ranks. He also, in smaller groups and to a more selected audience, directed his efforts towards facilitating the commission of terrorist actions in Spain and other EU countries.

The investigation has shown that the suspect maintained close links with well-known terrorist leaders based in Syria and working for Daesh13, whose job it was to facilitate the arrival of new combatants to war zones as well as providing instructions and resources to carry out terror attacks in Spain or other European countries.

Mirror travel editor Nigel Thompson believes UK tourists are ‘robust travellers’ and says:

We live in difficult times and this Spanish development is a concern for British tourists and the travel industry not least since hundreds of thousands have deserted Turkey for perceived safe havens in Spain, France and Italy. The attacks in Ankara and Istanbul were many hundreds of miles from Turkey s beach resorts but bookings are way down. That said, if you are still prepared to go, there are great bargains to be had.

Brits are robust travellers and do not give in to terror threats easily. At the moment events in Spain are just that. Threats. Thankfully, nothing has happened there and I do not think there will be significant numbers of UK cancellations as a result of this one arrest.

And some context. In Britain, MI5 s current terror threat level is: Severe an attack is highly likely. Sadly, the western tourist is always a soft target.

Outside wartime there have surely never been such turbulent times for British holidaymakers.
