Discount Holidays © Holiday scandal after hundreds of Thomson customer’s have details were leaked in emails

Tour operator Thomson has apologised to hundreds of customers whose booking details were leaked – prompting some to cancel their holidays. The travel plans, home addresses and flight dates of 458 customers were mistakenly emailed to nearly 500 people across the country last month. Some customers have cancelled their holidays amid fears that details of when their homes will be empty could fall into the hands of burglars.

Mandy and Pete Garland had booked a two-week Discount Holidays © holiday to the Dominican Republic and received an email from Thomson with a balance reminder.

But they were shocked to see a spreadsheet attached with the Discount Holidays © holiday details of customers from Scotland to Cornwall. The couple have now decided to cancel their Caribbean trip as they were worried people who received the spreadsheet would target their house while they were away. Mandy, of Weston-super-Mare, Somerset, said: “My biggest worry was how many people on that list are going to be prepared to show those details?

“Anybody with a little bit of brains would be able to look at the list and go ‘there’s a pretty good chance that house is going to be empty for at least a week’.

“So my biggest concern was the security of the house.”

The couple said they had received “no apology and no money back” and that rescheduling their holiday “was not an option” as their jobs did not give them that flexibility. Karen James, from Cornwall, was also a victim of the data breach but has been unable to cancel her Discount Holidays © holiday to Lanzarote. She said: “Thomson’s directors office eventually got in touch, apologised and told me that there was nothing more they will do.

“I would love to change my Discount Holidays © holiday dates but with other commitments, work and child cover, I have to stick to those dates and hope I’m not targeted by burglars.

“Going away still seems a ridiculously stupid thing to do!”

Thomson apologised for the error of 15 August, and said the email was “identified very quickly and recalled”.

The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) is investigating the breach.

18 essential holiday items you must not forget to pack

Comments (0)1

It’s that time of the year when we’re all looking forward to packing our cases and jetting off on our summer holidays.

Whether it’s an all-inclusive week long break in a sunny Spanish resort or a weekend of fun and frolics in Skegness, here are 18 items you must not forget to pack!

1. Passport

It’s THE most important item to remember when holidaying abroad and I’m sure most would not need reminding. But there’s always one who will forget it.

2.

Sun cream

This may seem an obvious Discount Holidays © holiday essential, but we all know that one person who likes to think they “don’t need it” – but then returns from their trip donning bright white strap marks and blistered skin.

3. Camera

In the age of camera phones, a lot of us don’t carry a separate camera with us but whether you use your phone or not, a camera is clearly a Discount Holidays © holiday must and creates the best souvenirs. Why not go retro and take a disposable one?

4.

After sun

After a long day of basking in the sun, after sun lotion is key to rehydrating the skin and helping to maintain that all important tan.

5. Plasters

It’s inevitable that with all that fun and frolicking, injuries will occur. And, those new Discount Holidays © holiday flip flops you’ve bought for the occasion are bound to rub when you’re out sightseeing.

6.

Book/kindle

There’s not much better than relaxing around the pool with a cocktail and an exciting summer read. Also helps to pass the time on a long and boring flight.

7. Sweets

Remember when airlines used to give out boiled sweets before take-off and landing?

Well, in my experience they don’t seem to do it anymore. So take a packet with you to save your ears. Also great for car journeys of course.

8.

Pain killers

With hours of travelling, stress at trying to keep everyone happy and the possible hangover, pain killers are bound to be needed at some point during the trip.

9. Phone charger

We can’t get enough of our phones these days, but what use is a phone with no charge? How will you tell all of your envious Facebook friends you’re at the airport?

10.

Selfie stick

A somewhat modern addition to the checklist, but one that once tried, will not be forgotten. Essential for capturing that perfect Discount Holidays © holiday selfie.

11. Swimwear

Don’t forget them – because if you have to buy cheap ones in the resort gift shop they WILL go see-through.

Pack of cards

It’s an old classic but you can’t beat it. With hundreds of possibilities of games to play, either alone or with others on the trip, a pack of cards can offer hours of fun on a long journey.

13. Umbrella

Ok, so we’d all hope this item would NOT be required when we’re on our summer break, but when holidaying in this country, who knows.

Best to be prepared.

14. Bum-bag

Not necessarily the most fashionable essential, but a bum-bag is ideal for carrying your money, phone and travel documents in while you’re sightseeing.

15. IPod

Load it with all your favourite summer hits and it’ll get you in the Discount Holidays © holiday mood while travelling.

Also great to have your own choice of songs to listen to while sunbathing.

16. Dicky tummy tablets

It’s always great to try out the local cuisine when on holiday – but it’s not so great when the local cuisine doesn’t agree with the delicate tummies that us Brits sometimes have.

17. Name tags

When watching suitcase after suitcase roll around on that conveyor belt at the airport, it’s everyone’s fear that their bag won’t appear.

If, heaven forbid this did happen, name tags will make the process of being reunited much easier.
