Londoners should expect heavy traffic both ends of the long weekend and several rail networks are running reduced services, with the Gatwick Express not operating at all.

Londoners joining the traditional bank Discount Holidays © holiday mass exodus should expect traffic to be much heavier than normal on leaving the capital Friday evening, the AA warned. Some main routes in and around London and the South East could experience a 50 per cent increase in regular Friday late afternoon traffic, the motoring organisation said. Their spokesperson recommended families set off later on – ideally after 7pm. The main congestion hotspots are set to include all sections of the M25, the M6 in the West Midlands and the A303 westbound through Hampshire, Wiltshire and Somerset.

Engineering work is set to cause huge disruption this weekend with Virgin Trains and Great Western Railway running reduced services and the Gatwick Express not operating. London Paddington will see reduced services over the weekend as Crossrail and electrification work continues. There will be no Gatwick Express services between the West Sussex airport and London Victoria will operate during the weekend. Fast, direct services will run to and from London Bridge instead.

However, Network Rail (NR), which manages Britain s rail track and major stations, claimed it would be one of the least disruptive bank holidays for railway travel for many years . The company s chief executive, Mark Carne, said: We re continuing with our huge investment programme and we have a lot of work to do this weekend, but we ve planned it as far as possible to minimise disruption. NOTE: National Express said it is adding 8,000 extra seats to its services between Friday and Monday to cope with demand, most of them into and out of the capital.

Most of the London Underground will operate as normal, but TfL Rail services, the London Overground and the Northern Line will see part closures.

Overgound

On Sunday and Monday there will be no service between Romford and Upminster or between Gospel Oak and Barking. Replacement bus services will run.

TfL Rail

There will be no service between Ilford and Shenfield, but replacement buses will run all weekend.

Northern Line

There will be no service between Archway and High Barnet / Mill Hill East all weekend. Replacement bus services will operate.

Travellers hoping to escape London over the long Easter weekend could be facing major headaches as Victoria, Waterloo, Paddington, Liverpool Street, Cannon Street and Charing Cross stations ALL have work taking place – not forgetting the Underground, Overground (wombling free) AND the Heathrow and Gatwick airport services.

London Victoria

All lines between London Victoria and Clapham Junction will be closed for engineering work from Good Friday March 25 to Easter Monday March 28, whilst a limited service between London Bridge and Brighton will operate in the morning and evening across the four days. Buses will run between London Victoria and Clapham Junction, and on Good Friday March 25 and Saturday March 26 a shuttle service will run between Clapham Junction and Caterham / Epsom / Epsom Downs.

London Victoria to Bognor Regis / Dorking / East Grinstead / Eastbourne / Ore / Portsmouth Harbour services will be diverted to start from London Bridge on Good Friday March 25 and Saturday March 26.

On Easter Sunday March 27, London Victoria to Bexhill / Bognor Regis / East Grinstead / Littlehampton / Portsmouth Harbour services will be diverted to start from London Bridge, and London Bridge to Tonbridge services will run between Redhill and Tonbridge. A shuttle service will operate between Clapham Junction and Caterham / West Croydon. On Easter Monday March 28, London Victoria to Bognor Regis / East Grinstead / Eastbourne / Ore / Portsmouth Harbour services will be diverted to start from London Bridge.

Gatwick Express

The Gatwick Express will not run from Good Friday March 25 to Easter Monday March 28. Passengers are advised to travel to London Bridge and use alternative Southern services. Overnight trains are replaced by buses between London Victoria and Gatwick.

London Cannon Street

There will be no Southeastern trains to or from London Cannon Street on Good Friday March 25 and Saturday March 26 due to Thameslink engineering work. On Easter Sunday March 27, trains which normally run between London Cannon Street and Hayes / Orpington / Sevenoaks are amended to run to or from London Charing Cross.

London Charing Cross

Due to Thameslink engineering work, on Good Friday March 25 and Saturday March 26, services between London Charing Cross and Gillingham will be diverted, not calling at Charlton, Woolwich Arsenal or Abbey Wood but calling additionally at Eltham and Bexleyheath. These services will also not run between Gravesend and Gillingham. Services between London Charing Cross and Hayes will call additionally at Lewisham. Additional trains will run between New Cross and Plumstead, calling all stations via Lewisham. Services between London Charing Cross and Gravesend will depart up to 2 minutes earlier and call additionally at Lewisham.

Buses will run between New Cross, Deptford, Greenwich, Maze Hill, Westcombe Park and Charlton. Additional trains will run between London Charing Cross and Tunbridge Wells.

London Liverpool Street

There will be no trains between London Liverpool Street and Ingatestone / Wickford from Good Friday March 25 to Easter Monday March 28. This will affect Greater Anglia trains between London Liverpool Street and Norwich / Southend Victoria / Harwich International / Clacton-on-Sea / Ipswich and TfL Rail trains between London Liverpool Street and Gidea Park / Shenfield.

On Good Friday, Saturday and Easter Monday replacement buses will operate between Newbury Park Underground station and Wickford / Ingatestone.

On Easter Sunday, replacement buses will be extended to operate between Newbury Park Underground and Wickford / Witham / Chelmsford. Passengers travelling to/from London should change at Witham for the replacement bus service. On Good Friday and Saturday, no trains will run between Gidea Park and Shenfield, and an amended service will run between London Liverpool Street and Chadwell Heath / Gidea Park. Replacement buses will run every 15 minutes between Gidea Park and Shenfield, calling at Harold Wood and Brentwood. On Easter Sunday and Easter Monday, no trains will run between London Liverpool Street and Shenfield.

Replacement buses will run every 15 minutes between Shenfield and Newbury Park Underground, calling at Brentwood, Harold Wood, Gidea Park, Romford and Chadwell Heath. Replacement buses will also run every 15 minutes between Romford and Stratford, calling at Chadwell Heath, Goodmayes, Seven Kings, Ilford, Manor Park and Forest Gate.

London Waterloo

Buses replace South West trains between Clapham Junction and Barnes from Friday 25 to Monday 28 March, affecting trains between London Waterloo and Reading / Windsor & Eton Riverside / Weybridge / Kingston and the London Waterloo Circular. Trains are diverted between Clapham Junction and Twickenham calling additionally at Kingston. Trains will not call at stations between Clapham Junction and Twickenham via Barnes. On Easter Sunday, trains from Reading to London Waterloo will call also at Wimbledon, and trains will run between Barnes and Windsor & Eton Riverside with some trains running via Richmond and others via Hounslow.

London Waterloo Circulars via Brentford will not run, whilst trains via Twickenham will run between Barnes and Kingston.

Trains will run between Barnes and Weybridge / Woking.

London Paddington

Great Western Railway trains between London Paddington and Reading will be affected by engineering works between Good Friday March 25 and Easter Monday March 28. Most trains between London Paddington and Reading and beyond are retimed to run earlier or later than the normal timetable, some services may be cancelled, make additional stops, or not call at all stations. You have to use replacement buses to complete your journey.

Trains between London Paddington and Greenford will not run. Passengers should use local buses or London Underground services. Trains between Twyford and Henley-on-Thames will run to an hourly timetable. Additionally on Friday, trains between London Paddington and Newbury / Bedwyn will run between Reading and Newbury / Bedwyn.

Heathrow Connect

From Saturday March 26 to Easter Monday March 28, Heathrow Connect and Heathrow Express trains will be affected by engineering work. On Saturday and Monday Heathrow Connect trains will run to a half-hourly timetable and will not call at West Ealing and Hanwell. Passengers to and from West Ealing and Hanwell should use other trains. On Easter Sunday, the 05:12 / 05:28 London Paddington to Heathrow Airport T123 and 06:13 Heathrow Airport T123 to London Paddington will not run.

Heathrow Express

From Saturday March 26 to Easter Monday March 28, Heathrow Connect and Heathrow Express trains will be affected by engineering work. On Saturday and Monday, Heathrow Express trains will run to a half-hourly timetable

On Sunday, the 05:10, 05:25, 05:40, 05:55 from London Paddington to Heathrow Terminal 5 services and the 05:03, 05:18, 05:33, 05:48, 06:03, 06:33 from Heathrow Terminal 5 to London Paddington services will not run.

London Overground

Engineering is taking place at Romford from Saturday March 26 to Easter Monday March 28. This means all lines are closed and no trains will run between Romford and Upminster.

Passengers are advised to use local buses. From Good Friday March 25 to Easter Monday March 28, all lines between Camden Road and Stratford will be closed due to engineering work. Replacement buses will be running.

London Underground

From Saturday March 26 to Easter Sunday March 27 the following changes will be in effect:

District Line – No trains between Aldgate East and Dagenham East, no interchange at West Ham and Barking.

Hammersmith & City Line – No trains between London Liverpool Street and Barking, no interchange at London Liverpool Street, West Ham and Barking.

Metropolitan Line – No trains between Moor Park and Amersham / Chesham, no interchange at Chalfont & Latimer and Amersham.

London Victoria
