Il Castello di Zumelle

Pictures of the medieval market at the Castle Zumelle, in North Italy and of course, some recommendations for the traveller who loves the local experience (and to eat well!)

Il castello di Zumelle (The Castle Zumelle) is just one of the numerous castles in Italy and perhaps many Italians wouldn t think of it as worth visiting. However, I think this has more to do with the fact that the Italians are spoiled with beautiful nature and architecture than it has to do with the aesthetic quality of Castello di Zumelle.

The advantage of small and local castles like Zumelle is that they are very much overlooked. That means that you can have them pretty much to yourself or, even better, share the experience with locals. Or Italians from other parts in the country on holiday. Especially if you travel in August (which I d really recommend you not to in Italy, as that s when basically all Italians go on holiday!). The castle is situated in the village Tiago in the province Belluno, where you ll find 70% of all the mountains of the region Veneto. So be prepared for small mountain roads and slopes and an amazing view. The castle itself dates back to 46-47 b.c.

Several guided tours, events and workshops with a medieval theme take place all through the year. We, my boyfriend Fabio and I, went there a nice evening in July for the medieval market and to see the falconer. Last but not least, to try out their restaurant with a medieval menu! Apart a desert cake hard as a rock (medieval style?), it was delicious.

Great concept, great atmosphere, great view.
