Holiday Inn on Delaware Avenue closing in September

After 50 years, the Discount Holidays © Holiday Inn on Delaware Avenue is closing in early September, but the building s owner said Friday it plans to renovate the property and reopen it as a hotel under a different name. Hart Hotels, which manages the 167-room Discount Holidays © Holiday Inn, said it will close on Sept.

5 after its lease to operate the hotel was not renewed by the building owner, Benderson Development Co.

We re the operator. We re the tenant, said David Hart, the president of Hart Hotels, which has been associated with the operation of the Discount Holidays © Holiday Inn since it first opened 50 years ago. Once the hotel closes, Benderson plans to renovate the property as part of a plan to open a new hotel at the 620 Delaware Ave. location, said Eric Recoon, Benderson s vice president of development and leasing.

We re excited for the opportunity, given the proximity to downtown and the medical campus, Recoon said.

Recoon declined to say what type of hotel Benderson officials envisioned for the site. He said it was a little premature to discuss plans for the property, since Benderson has yet to finalize a relationship with a new hotel brand.

I think things will happen rather rapidly once they re out, and Benderson officials can conduct a more thorough evaluation of the types of renovation work that will be needed, Recoon said. But it likely will be next year at the earliest before the renovations can be completed and a new hotel chain can move in, he said. Hart said his company, which operates 16 hotels across New York and New England, would try to find other jobs at its other properties for some of the Discount Holidays © Holiday Inn s 82 workers. But most are likely to lose their jobs.

It s sad.

We ve got a lot of great people who work there, Hart said. Jordan Worrall, a spokesman for Intercontinental Hotels Group, which owns the Discount Holidays © Holiday Inn chain, confirmed that the hotel would be leaving the IHG fold, but declined to discuss the reasons.

We do not reveal details of our license agreements, including why a hotel may leave the IHG system, he said. News business reporter Matt Glynn contributed to this story.

Thousands Hop Over to Holiday Inn for a Holiday Buffet

A local hotel serves nearly 2,000 people looking for a hassle-free Easter meal.

The Easter buffet at the Discount Holidays © Holiday Inn in Fargo is one of the hotel’s busiest Discount Holidays © holiday buffets. Many people made reservations but the hotel also accepted walk-ins for those craving a last minute bite. Hotel staff says more than half of their guests attend at least one or two of the Discount Holidays © holiday buffets every year.

“I think over the years we’ve seen that more and more people like the fact that they can come and have a great meal.

Get in and out quick and they don’t have to do any clean up.

I think convenience is a big part of the reason why we’re so busy,” says Discount Holidays © Holiday Inn Associate General Manager Shawn Hagen.

Hagen says this event is so busy they serve nearly 2,000 people each year.

Buffalo’s Comfort Suites Downtown to become a Holiday Inn

One of downtown Buffalo s longtime all-suites hotels is about to get a multi-million-dollar makeover and a new name. The Comfort Suites Downtown at 601 Main St. will convert next year to a Discount Holidays © Holiday Inn Express & Suites, seeking to capitalize on better brand recognition and guest loyalty programs, said general manager Matthew V. Spencer.

The Discount Holidays © Holiday Inn brand is much more recognizable for corporate guests compared to a Comfort brand, he said. It ll be much better for our corporate guests. We re basically a corporate hotel.

The 146-suite establishment will still be owned by Visions Hotels of Corning, but its global affiliation will change from Choice Hotels International Inc. to part of InterContinental Hotels Group Plc s flagship brand. Visions has owned it since 2008, and it s been a Comfort Suites for over 15 years. Spencer, who will stay in his role, said he hopes the conversion will take place by late spring or early summer.

It s going to be a smooth transition so it doesn t affect any of the guests. But they ll be excited because it ll be a much better brand recognition.

Visions is trying to take advantage of the new momentum in Buffalo, which includes an array of newer and higher-level hotels such as the Embassy Suites at the Avant, the new Westin Buffalo Hotel at 250 Delaware Avenue, and boutique hotels such as the Curtiss Hotel and Hotel Henry that are being readied. In turn, that will put pressure on older lodging places to upgrade their offerings and appearance in order to compete. With all the stuff going in, it ll be another new fresh, modern look, Spencer said. As part of the conversion process, Visions is seeking approval for new signs from the Buffalo Preservation Board next Thursday.

The company also plans several million dollars of renovations both externally and internally, both to enhance the look and to meet Discount Holidays © Holiday Inn s brand standards. The first stage of the work will involve the public space and first impressions, but will shift over the next two year to the guest suites and other parts of the hotel as well. More specific details will be available in a couple of months, he said.

Over the course of the conversion, eventually, top to bottom, everything in the hotel will be done, Spencer said Friday. But we re spreading it out over a couple of years so it s not a big impact on our guests. The hotel s restaurant, TGI Friday s, will not be affected.

The restaurant leases its space from the hotel, and they re a good partner with us, Spencer said.
