Manchester City vs Roma, pre-season friendly

Raheem Sterling scored on his first appearance for Manchester City since his 49 million transfer from Liverpool earlier this summer.

The England forward finished tidily after being put clean through on goal in the opening three minutes of Manchester City’s pre-season game with Roma in Melbourne.

Goals from Manchester City’s Kelechi Iheanacho, and Miralem Pjanic for Roma, meant the game was destined to finish in 2-1 to Manchester City before Adem Ljajic curled a free-kick past Joe Hart to take the game to penalties.

Full time result: Mancheter City 2-2 Roma (Man City win 5-4 on penalties)

We’re heading to penalties here as the game finishes Manchester City 2-2 Roma after 90 minutes. Roma have some prior form from the spot on this pre-season tour, after they overcame Real Madrid via the same method on Saturday.

I’ve had a response to my question on the origins of the phrase stonewall penalty.

Well, it’s more of a command than an answer to be honest…

Thanks for your email nonetheless, Ben. I’ll begin my General Jackson research once we’re done with these pesky penalties.

Goalscorer Kelechi Iheanacho makes way for another of Manchester City’s summer signings, Enes Unal. The Turkish striker boasts an incredible goal scoring record of 181 goals in 108 games for his former youth team in Turkey.

69 min

Manchester City still look the most likely team to add to the score sheet at the MCG. Some more neat footwork from Jesus Navas sets up Yaya Toure whose curling shot is neatly gathered up by the Roma keeper.

67 min

Roma have monopolised possession of the ball for the past two minutes but don’t really look like opening Manchester City up at this stage.

The Italians are pushing hard for an equaliser and look susceptible to the counter-attacking pace of Jesus Navas.

61 min

Medic! Pjanic has just nailed Seydou Keita with a tracer bullet of a free-kick. Thankfully the former Barcelona midfielder is back on his feet and looking lucid enough…

58 min

Yaya Toure brings down Nainggolan 40 yards out from Manchester City’s goal.

Pjanic chips the ball into a crowded penalty area but Ljajic is only able to nod the ball tamely into Joe Hart’s hands.

Manchester City open Roma up down the right hand-side again as Jesus Navas pulls the ball back to Lopez who can only manage to direct the ball straight at De Sanctis who parries the shot wide.

Early chance for Roma. Ljajic finds himself with time and space at the far post but fires the ball into Joe Hart’s near post side-netting.

We’re underway in the second half at the MCG. Both sides have made a raft of substitutions, with the notable changes including the appearance of Ashley Cole and Joe Hart. Raheem Sterling has also made way with Samir Nasri taking his place.

There’s a ‘Secret Gallagher’ now?! Well it can only be one of the two brothers surely?

I think we need a cull on the population of the ‘Secret’ franchise, they’re reproducing at an alarming rate…

Another look at that penalty claim from Raheem Sterling confirms what we originally suspected – absolute stonewaller.

Incidentally, if anybody can let me know the etymology behind the ‘stonewall’ reference, I’d be genuinely grateful.

Lunch at the MCG. A thoroughly enjoyable and frantic first half ends with the score Manchester City 1-1 Roma.

42 min

Some clever work from Pjanic puts Florenzi through down the right hand side of the penalty area but Mangala manages to re-arrange his legs and clear the resultant cross away from the waiting Totti. Roma firmly on top now with Clichy looking particularly vulnerable at left-back.

40 min

Man City striker Iheanacho is also catching the eye in this first half at the MCG.

The 18-year-old Nigerian has linked well in a front three with David Silva and Raheem Sterling.

David Silva threads a sumptuous ball through to the cantering Bacary Sagna who is just beaten to the ball by the advancing De Sanctis. Still 1-1.

33 min

We’ve just had the obligatory description of David Silva as a ‘little magician’. Terry Gibson has gone as far to say that Raheem Sterling should have his passport stamped with world class. I’m not sure that’s how international air-travel works, Terry.

32 min

Raheem Sterling’s impressive opening 30 minutes for Manchester City has been drawing some reaction from Liverpool fans on Twitter…

I see Raheem Sterling has scored.

He may have just scored but this is still hillarious.

Crikey! Right back Florenzi carries the ball forward from the halfway line before unleashing a stinging drive which just grazes Cabellero’s crossbar.

24 min

Raheem Sterling is denied a stonewall penalty after sending the Roma full-back inside, then out, before falling over Florenzi’s outstretched leg. Roma are really struggling to deal with the 49 million man as we approach the halfway stage of the first half.

21 min

A neat one-two between Florenti and Gervinho puts the former Arsenal winger through on goal but the Ivory Coast striker can only pull the ball back to a waiting Vincent Kompany.

18 min

The game has now settled down into something resembling a normal pace.

Both sides have had plenty of success in behind both sets of full-backs, with Gervinho and Sterling looking particularly dangerous.

14 mins

Not one to be up-staged, Pjanic leveled with this stonking pile driver.

In the words of Alan Partridge, ‘he must have a foot like a traction engine’.

12 mins

ICYMI (let’s face it, you probably did) here’s Raheem Sterling’s first goal in a Manchester City shirt:

Quite frankly I’m breathless watching this. Whatever happened to the drab, low tempo friendlies we’ve become so accustomed to?

Must be the pace in this MCG wicket…sorry.

8 mins

Manchester City Vs Roma, Pre-season Friendly What a goal – Pjanic immediately levels for Roma with a fabulous 30 yard strike.

6 min

Well that will do Raheem Sterling the world of good. The former Liverpool winger was loudly jeered by the MCG crowd (which Englishman doesn’t?), but that goal should settle him down.

Raheem Sterling is back into the thick of it straight away, getting up-ended in the penalty area but his claims for a spot-kick are waved away.

Manchester City Vs Roma, Pre-season FriendlyIncredible – Sterling scores! Seconds after falling over the ball on the left wing, Sterling goes clean through on goal and calmly slips the ball past the oncoming goalkeeper into the bottom corner.

Raheem Sterling gets his first touch of the ball straight from the kick-off.

The pitch is in quite horrendous condition so I’m not expecting much free-flowing football.

Manuel Pellegrini reluctantly poses for selfies with the MCG crowd as the two sides line-up for…? Waltzing Matilda?

A reminder of Manchester City’s transfer business so far this summer.

Obviously the inevitable then happened…

Raheem Sterling will make his first appearance for Manchester City after his long drawn-out departure from Liverpool last week. Sterling has since made efforts to heal the wounds created in the transfer sage, admitting he regrets the way he left the Merseyside club:

Manchester City Vs Roma, Pre-season FriendlyI was a bit disappointed how I left.

That was the main problem I’ve had with the situation – how I’ve left it with Liverpool.

I’m good with everyone at the football club, the manager, the players and I wish them well for the new season. But it was really disappointing how it did finish off.

From the first moment I heard City were interested in me I wanted to join, purely because of the direction the football club is going in.

I’ve met all my team-mates now and it’s been a really good few days, they’ve made me feel welcome and I’m really happy to be here. I think I made the right decision.”

The Manchester City players are partaking in the usual inspection of the MCG wicket.

There’s plenty of grass out there so I’ll be surprised if Yaya Toure doesn’t decide to have a bowl…

Good morning all. Callum Davis (@the_callumdavis if you’re a keen Twitterer) here to take you through the best of the action from Manchester City’s clash with Roma from the MCG – football in a cricket ground, what has the world come to?

The last time these two met, Manchester City overcame the Italians 2-0 to progress to the last 16 of the Champions League. Here’s hoping for a similarly entertaining fixtures today.

Raheem Sterling is expected to make his Manchester City debut against Roma on Tuesday.

Manuel Pellegrini confirmed the 49million summer signing from Liverpool18 is in line to feature in the International Champions Cup match in Melbourne.

The Chilean added that other returning internationals such as Joe Hart, David Silva and Edin Dzeko could also be involved.

Speaking at a press conference in Australia, he said: “They arrived late, because they were with internationals, just worked five days with us, but I think most will be involved, maybe not the whole game but some minutes.

“I think Raheem worked with Liverpool for three days and so he will play some minutes.

“I know him (Sterling).

I’ve seen him play against us for the last two seasons, but I think it’s important for him to try and have minutes with our team as soon as he can.”
