It appears holidaymakers have been messing with Texas, as a Dallas suburb has been named the top tourist-hating city in the US. The city of Arlington emerged as an unusual titleholder in a study that analysed more than 37,000 geotagged tweets that included the words tourist and tourists . It beat New York, Las Vegas, Boston and New Orleans, which rounded out the top five for mean tweets on a per capita basis.

Despite the findings tourists probably won t face any hostility in Arlington, which draws millions of visitors every year to attractions such as the original Six Flags amusement park, Dallas Cowboys football games and the International Bowling Museum and Hall of Fame. According to the study commissioned by Stratos Jet Charters2, Chicago loves tourists the most, followed by Atlanta, Philadelphia, Miami and Portland.

The study looked at positive and negative tourist-related tweets from each state, and rated them based on a sentiment analysis algorithm. The state with the most hate for tourists was another surprising result, with Delaware eclipsing Wyoming, Connecticut, Rhode Island and Georgia, the study found.

With Twitter being a popular outlet for locals to complain about tourists, the most vulgar tweets were found in Washington, DC, Nevada and New York, according to the study.

The most welcoming states were Illinois, Montana, New Hampshire, North Dakota and Nebraska.
