A tourist celebrating his 20th wedding anniversary in Venice was allegedly attacked by restaurant waiting staff after complaining his steak wasn’t cooked properly. The man and his wife, from Belgium, had booked a table at the Trattoria Casanova in the centre of the city for the special occasion. However, when their food was delivered, the husband told the waiter that he was not happy with the way his steak was cooked.

The waiters then took the dish back and changed the meal. However the man refused to pay, reports Italian newspaper Il Messaggero1. An eyewitness told the paper: ‘The waiters reacted badly and violently with verbal threats and gestures.

‘In a flash the tourist was knocked to the ground. They hit him with fists and kicked until he fell.’

The restaurant is believed to be owned by an Albanian businessman who has successfully run other venues in the city for 15 years.

The Local2 reports that ‘the tourist was taken to hospital, accompanied by his wife, where he spent the night in accident and emergency after sustaining a black eye and broken teeth in the attack.’

Trattoria Casanova is ranked the 962nd best restaurant out of 1,218 in Venice on the ratings website TripAdvisor.

Of the 54 people who have left reviews, 23 rated it as ‘terrible’, with 14 saying it was ‘excellent.’

Lenny Poli describes the restaurant as a ‘dangerous place’ and says that ‘both food and service were not good.’

Ibraheem Alhanaky tags his review with ‘Ok food terrible service,’ while TripAdvisor user Dilworth32 comments: ‘Don’t go bad customers service, over charged.’

However Denise B from Shropshire, who gave the venue a four-star rating, writes: ‘My husband and I visited this restaurant twice during our recent four night stay in Venice.

‘I have read the previous negative reviews and I can honestly say that we did not experience anything like that.

‘The restaurant is very nicely decorated and has plenty of tables.’

MailOnline Travel has made attempts to contact the Trattoria Casanova and is awaiting comment.
