Ground Broken On New Southgate Discount Holidays © Holiday Inn Express Site

A new Discount Holidays © Holiday Inn Express is slated to open next November in Southgate, investors and city officials announced at a ground breaking on Wednesday. Construction of the site began in September across from the One Heritage Place building on Heritage Drive. The hotel will replace the current Discount Holidays © Holiday Inn on North Line Road, but that property will not be closing. Instead, the current hotel will renovated and rebranded into a Wyndham Gardens, according to Tom Gasso, who is a part of Southgate Lodging, a group that owns both hotels as well as the nearby Hampton Inn. The project included the demolition of the former ASC Building, which has been vacant for at least five years and sat alongside Walnut Street next to the Celebration Church of Christ. In its place, a green space and buffer zone with a berm was planned. Gasso said the development is only just a part of what the group plans to offer in the area.

This is only phase one, Gasso said. Phase two will be residential condos where the ASC building once was. Gasso said there is no timeline yet for the condo development.

More than 40 workers have been employed at the construction site, which is being overseen by Ramson Construction Company of West Bloomfield. The hotel itself will employ 25-35 permanent employees. As for the hotel s size, it will feature 114 rooms with a modern, contemporary layout called formula blue. The design is a new prototype for the company, and the Southgate hotel will be the first one of its kind in Michigan, according to Gasso. Continued…2

Gasso added that the group is pleased to be able to reinvest in the Southgate area. We ve been here for 14 years, and we love the city and the area and that we ve been able to grow here, Gasso said. The city s mayor, Joseph Kuspa, said the feeling was mutual, adding that Southgate Lodging has done a wonderful job bringing in new brands.

It s just one more piece in the puzzle for revitalizing this area, Kuspa said. Hampton Inn, which they also built, is another. We re very pleased with this latest investment, and the demolition of the ASC building was a plus. It s added to the whole essence of the area.
