The words ‘British holiday’ sum up vivid images for many Brits – sandy sandwiches, 99 cones and chilly paddling all integral to the experience.

And when the trips to the seaside have been exhausted, everyone from toddlers to pensioners are hauled onto the local tour bus, tram or boat to check out the sites.

London and Edinburgh have several bus companies vying for business, but even local towns are in on the act with places like Weston Super Mare and Scarborough touting trips around local landmarks.

In an effort to capture the atmosphere on these buses photographer Ross Paxton spent two years on holidays within the UK taking pictures on 25 different bus tour routes in everywhere from Whitby to the Isle of Bute.

The result, A General History of Timeless Landscapes, is a collection of quintessentially British photos of grumpy holidaymakers frowning out across often grey and blustery landscapes.1
