It feels like a long time since Peter Sagan1 finished second in a race, but in reality it was only two race days ago. Fast forward to January and the world champion has that familiar feeling once again2 at the Tour de San Luis. The Tinkoff3 man was the runner-up on 18 occasions in 2015, including five times at the Tour de France, and found himself playing the bridesmaid to Fernando Gaviria4 on Tuesday s stage two in Argentina.

For Gaviria it was also a familiar feeling, having won the first sprint stage of last year s Tour de San Luis ahead of Mark Cavendish7. Now he can add another major scalp to his list. With a strong leadout by race leader Maximiliano Ariel Richeze8, Gaviria shot past his rivals to reach the line first, giving Etixx-Quick Step9 their second win in as many stages.

Team Sky10 s Elia Viviani, riding for an Italian national team, sprinted to third place behind Sagan.
