REVEALED: Bristol Airport is the MOST expensive to travel to for holiday-makers

Bristol Airport is the most expensive in the country for Discount Holidays © holiday makers to reach. A study into the UK’s busiest airports2 have revealed journeys to and from Bristol3 Airport cost more per mile than Gatwick, Birmingham, Heathrow and Manchester. In fact travellers heading for the West Country airport spend 50p per mile more than journeys to and from Gatwick and Heathrow.

The lack of a nearby train station is cited as the main reason it is so expensive as passengers are forced to resort to bus and taxi services.

The average taxi journey from Bristol city centre to the airport costs 22, or around 2.82 a mile, according to a study by Voucherbox.co.uk

Voucherbox spokesman Shane Forster said: “More than 240 million passengers use the UK’s airports each year and that figure is predicted to rise to 270 million by 2020 and a massive 470 million by 2050.

“Getting those people to and from their respective airport of choice is big business and it seems to be something of a lottery.

“Our advice to those booking flights is always to calculate the overall cost of your journey, including get to and from their journeys.”

A spokesperson from Bristol Airport said; “An increasing number of passengers use public transport to get to and from Bristol Airport. Operating every eight minutes at peak times, the Flyer Express provides a fast and frequent service, with free wifi and electric charging points for customers use between the Airport and Bristol city centre. Other regular buses also serve Bath and South Wales.

We believe there are significant time and cost benefits for passengers choosing to fly from their local airport and, with more public transport links across the South West to be announced soon, we are focused on making Bristol Airport even more accessible to travellers from across our region.”

Birmingham Airport was revealed as the cheapest major airport to travel to. Passengers travelling by bus to the airport pay on average 31p per mile, making the total fare from the city centre 3. This is nearly three times less than people going to Bristol airport who pay 90p per mile, and 7 for the full fare, despite the airport being closer to the city centre than in Birmingham.

Stansted is the second cheapest airport to reach in the UK, with the cheapest cost per mile taxi cost in the study at 1.88 and the cheapest cost per mile coach journey at 0.25 a mile.

However, the Heathrow Express is the most expensive train journey to an airport in the UK at 1.47 per mile.
