UK’s best fish and chip shop announced

But the Independent Takeaway Fish and Chip Shop of the Year have compiled a list of their top places and crowned Simpsons Fish & Chips in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire as the victor. Starchip Enterprise was crowned the victor of the United Kingdom wide award which recognises fish and chip businesses that excel at operating on a mobile basis, during a prestigious ceremony at the Lancaster London Hotel in London. It’s true that there are a lot of not-so-great chip suppers out there – including some central London tourist traps – but there are also a host of excellent establishments.

The Fish Bar at Sunnybank Road in Crewe, won the From Field to Frier award at the 2016 National Fish and Chip Awards, organised by Seafish1, on January, 20. The Ritchies, who have just unveiled a dramatic union jack-themed decor at the restaurant, said they had tried to develop “a strong brand which can compete with some of the familiar big catering businesses”. This included several mystery shopping assessments and in-depth audits by industry experts, who reviewed everything from responsible sourcing policies to menu diversification.

The final stage of judging put the shop’s presentation skills to the test as they faced a 12-strong specialist industry judging panel and were up against the nine other regional finalists. And as a family business they pride themselves in serving up delicious freshly prepared fish and chips, high standards of service and food. We’re determined to push fish and chips forward and keep growing our business’.

“They stood out for their robust sourcing policy, passionate work with local communities, innovative approach to branding and marketing and continual business growth and expansion”.

“At The Fish Bar, we trace our potatoes back to their source and we carry out regular sugar testing measurements to ensure the quality is the best we can get – we even have a glass preparation screen within the shop so customers can see our methods in action”.

The National Fish & Chip Awards, now in its 28th year, champions the British gastronomic institution by rewarding independent eateries across the country that meet its strict judging criteria.
