Cornwall, the Lake District and the Scottish Highlands named as the top staycation destinations in the UK

Forget splashing out the big bucks to travel abroad, plenty of Brits are opting for staycations this summer and it’s Cornwall, the Lake District and the Scottish Highlands that are the most popular destinations. Known for its miles of golden sandy beaches, Cornwall was found to be the most popular destination in Britain, with 31 per cent of adults in a recent survey saying it was their number one Discount Holidays © holiday spot for this summer. This was followed by Lake District (17 per cent) and the Scottish Highlands (12 per cent) in second and third places respectively.

Known for its miles of golden sandy beaches and dubbed as the Cornish Rivera Cornwall has emerged as a the top hotspot for relaxed independent fun in the sun, according to a recent survey

Also featuring in the staycation survey, conducted by comfort-insurance.co.uk, were the picturesque Yorkshire Dales and the Norfolk Broads. Staycation holidays are tipped for another boom this year, following a seven per cent increase in 2015, with a whopping 105 million trips taking place over 12 months. Part of this demand is attributed to celebrity campervanners and caravanners such as Chris Evans, Kate Moss, Jamie Oliver and Rio Ferdinand, who have helped to make ‘holidays on wheels’ an on-trend choice.

In fact over a quarter (27 per cent) of Brits chose the leisure vehicles as their preferred accommodation and travel option, over staying in hotels. Sales for campervans and caravans are said to have boomed by 10 per cent, with the lure and freedom of the open road being a key attraction driving the trend. Over half (54 per cent) of those questioned said that that they love caravanning and campervanning because they can explore areas off the beaten track.

Meanwhile 23 per cent said the main attraction of life on the road was the fact they could take their pets with them. In third place was the Scottish Highlands. In the survey 12 per cent of adults said it was their top choice
