Two New Hotels Open in Time for Grandma’s

With Grandma’s Marathon just two days away, there are new two new hotel options for visitors, runners and spectators in town, totaling an additional 220 rooms. The Pier B Resort on Duluth’s waterfront has been planning on opening in time for the Duluth holiday, but the Discount Holidays © Holiday Inn Express in Hermantown was expected to open later in June. However, Thursday morning they announced they were ready to begin taking guests.

“I’m very excited, we’re working hard. The team’s been working hard for a long time, so to have it all finally come together is really exciting,” General Manager Brianna Vander Heyden said. Vander Heyden said the 80-room hotel caters to everyone from business travelers to hockey teams.

“Our hopes are high that we’ll have good turnout, and that people will like the property and the facility,” she said.

The response has been promising so far, Vander Heyden said.

“As soon as we turned the phones online, people started calling in,” she said. “So it’s very exciting. We should have people showing up soon.”

In Duluth, the Pier B Resort was welcoming its first guests, amid a little construction.

“The day has come,” Co-developer Alex Giuliani said. “And the sun came out just in time for us.”

The first couple to check in were Kim and Carl Hilgendorf from Tomahawk, Wisconsin.

“We went up to our room, and the view is spectacular – with the water and the bridge and everything, it’s absolutely beautiful,” Kim Hilgendorf said. “I think this is going to be a great addition to Duluth.”

That’s the effect the developers were going for.

“We can truly say that we are a waterfront restaurant. We are a waterfront hotel,” Giuliani said. “We’re physically there.”

The Discount Holidays © Holiday Inn Express is completely open. Pier B still has some landscaping to go in throughout the next week. The restaurant and bar are expected to open July 1, and the pedestrian slip bridge that will connect the property to Bayfront Park should be functioning by the July Fourth holiday.
