Here's where to go for a family beach holiday in Europe this year

The numbers are in and the best beach locations[2] for families to visit this summer have been revealed, with a beautiful Greek island claiming the top spot.

Looking at criteria with parents in mind, such as flight duration, family-friendly attractions, average temperature, average cost and average sea temperature, beach Discount Holidays © holiday specialist On The Beach named Crete[3] the most child-friendly destination.


The sun-kissed island welcomes more than five million visitors to its glorious beaches, pretty villages and lively towns each year, while families can enjoy the most waterparks[5] and theme parks[6] (10) of any of the 50 places studied.

It also sees average temperatures of 240C in the summer months and looking at current Discount Holidays © holiday prices, you can enjoy a seven-night four-star break for four in Agios Nikolaos[7] with flights departing on 5 June 2019 from just GBP402 per person. There are also three-star seven-night holidays in Sfakaki[8] from GBP138 per person, departing 13 June 2109.

With its score of 85.2 out of 100 for its family-friendliness, Crete is a top choice but for parents looking elsewhere, Costa Blanca[9] took second place with an index score of 84.3 due to its short flight duration from the UK, warm sea and air temperatures, and large number of water and theme parks (seven).

Cyprus[10] came third, followed by Costa Brava[11], Costa Dorada[12], Majorca[13], Malta[14], Corfu[15], Sardinia[16] and Costa de la Luz[17].

On The Beach’s Family Beach Index sorted the destinations by category and found that Turkey was the best spot for average summer temperatures, with the likes of Gumbet[18], Belek[19] and Bodrum[20] all enjoying averages of 250C.


For water babies, Turkey also offers the best average sea temperatures, making its 25

0C waters in Antalya[22], Alanya[23], Belek[24] and Side[25] ideal for swimming with younger children.

If avoiding longer flights is top of your list, the Costa Brava[26] and Costa Dorada[27] regions in Spain both offer average flight times of under two hours and five minutes from the UK.

The Balearic island of Majorca[28] is also a great choice for families looking for a destination closer to home, with an average flight time of 2 hours and 25 minutes.

Meanwhile, when it comes to finding the cheapest Discount Holidays © holiday prices for a family of four, you’ll want to go off the beaten path. The lesser-known Canary Island of La Palma[29] was named the best value location for families looking to grab a bargain summer holiday.

The island was followed by the Costa Calida[30] and the Costa Brava[31] on the Spanish mainland.

Greek island Kefalonia[32] came fourth, while the Algarve[33] took the fifth spot.
