Now Christmas is a distant memory, you're waiting for payday[1] and the cold weather isn't going away anytime soon, you might be dreaming of faraway locations.

If January blues have got you wishing for a holiday, you're in luck. The Post Office Holiday Money Report 2020[2] has revealed the best value destinations to visit this year, both in Europe and further afield.

The good news for Brits planning a holiday is that over eight in 10 of Post Office's bestselling currencies are weaker against sterling than they were a year ago, meaning there are plenty of great value destinations[3] to visit this year.

So, even if you're feeling the pinch this month, you've got plenty of places to choose from...

What we're buying on holiday

The report compares eight tourist staples, across 42 worldwide destinations, to find which holiday location offers the best value. These eight staples are:

  • A cup of filter coffee in a cafe or bar
  • Bottle of local beer/lager in a cafe or bar (330ml)
  • Bottle/can of Coca-Cola or Pepsi in a cafe or bar (330ml)
  • Glass of wine in a cafe or bar (175ml)
  • 1.5l bottle of mineral water from a supermarket
  • Suncream from a supermarket (200ml, SPF15)
  • Insect repellent from a supermarket (50ml)
  • Three course evening meal for two, including a bottle of house wine.

Where are the best value locations?

Sunny Beach, Bulgaria, is still the cheapest place to go. Here these staples will cost you just GBP30.68.

Other locations where these eight holiday buys will cost you less than GBP50 include Marmaris (Turkey), Algarve (Portugal) and - surprisingly - Tokyo!

On the opposite side of the scale, the two most expensive destinations are Abu Dhabi City and Mahe, Seychelles. In both of these locations, these eight staples will cost you over GBP150!

Are holidays going down in price this year?

It's good news!

2020 should be a good year for a cheap holiday[4]. According to the research, sterling is stronger year-on-year against 24 of Post Office's top-selling 40 currencies, including the Euro and the Dollar.

Its biggest gain was against the Turkish lira, which is probably why holidaying in Marmaris, Turkey, is a good value option this year.

Moreover, local price cuts and falling prices in many popular destinations[5] mean your money should go even further. Visiting Antigua in 2020 is 44% cheaper than it would have been a year ago and in Corfu, Greece, prices are 21% lower.

What about cheap flights and accommodation?

The Post Office survey includes prices for items once you're on holiday. It doesn't factor in how much flights[6] or accommodation may cost for the chosen destinations.

To search for cheap flights, try Skyscanner[7].

It compares the cheapest flights available across different airlines and has an option to filter by the cheapest dates if you're not picky about when you go away. Kayak[8] provides a similar service.

For hotels, use Trivago[9] to compare room prices across different sites. You could potentially save hundreds of pounds, as it will include any flash deals or offers. You can also try Airbnb for holiday lets.

The site allows you to filter by location and price.
