Even by its own increasingly chaotic standards, the mess into which the government has got itself over its new quarantine rules takes some beating. The requirement that all new arrivals to Britain must self-isolate for 14 days came into force at midnight on Sunday, but Downing Street is already distancing itself from its own policy. No 10 has let it be known that Boris Johnson wants this quarantine lifted as soon as possible and has ordered ministers to negotiate "travel corridors" to allow unrestricted travel to some European countries to resume before the start of the summer holidays.
