Greece and Croatia could be added to Covid travel quarantine list today

More destinations could be added to the UK quarantine list within hours because of a rising number of coronavirus cases in Europe. Croatia and Greece are among the countries under threat with Austria, Denmark and Switzerland causing concern, it is understood - although it is unlikely that immediate restrictions will be imposed on travel to Greece or its islands. Transport Secretary Grant Shapps is expected to officially announce any new restrictions later today (Thursday), reports BirminghamLive.

It has been reported that government officials are understood to have traced coronavirus cases in the UK that were "imported" by passengers arriving from Croatia.

The number of cases in the UK linked to Croatia is understood to be at a similar level to Spain when it was banned from the safe travel list. Croatia has seen a spike in the number of cases in recent days with 219 fresh coronavirus infections registered on Wednesday alone, bringing the total number to 7,074 in the Adriatic country. Croatia's exclusion will reportedly be announced by the UK government this afternoon, giving holidaymakers an expected deadline of early Saturday morning, the Daily Telegraph reports.

Those who arrive after the cut off must self-isolate for 14 days once back in the UK. There are estimated to be 20,000 UK holidaymakers currently in Croatia. Paul Charles, boss of travel consultancy PC Agency, told The Guardian he believed Croatia would be removed "based on the government's own criteria".

A Government spokesman said: "We continue to keep these rules under constant review and we publish a list of the countries and territories that we are concerned about. You'll have seen the last update as of last week." Asked whether Greece and its islands would count as one country for quarantine rule purposes, he added: "As I say, we will continue to keep data for all countries and territories under constant review.

We update the list on a weekly basis."

However, industry experts have dismissed claims that Greece will be added to the quarantine list and Portugal will soon be freed from travel restrictions because its infection rate has not fallen sufficiently.
