Until then, learn how there's more to Malta than meets the eye, as we reveal with our round-up of its most beautiful undiscovered wonders...

Malta's hidden gems

Malta's got it all: With more than 300 days of sunshine every year and tip-top views at every turn.

But veer away from the popular tourist spots, and you'll be treated to an unforgettable holiday.

Three Cities

Opposite Valletta's Grand Harbour sit the Three Cities of Malta, a trio of historic urban centres. The oldest of these is Vittoriosa, which houses key monuments from Malta's history, including the Inquisitor's Palace, where the cells still contain drawings etched into the walls by prisoners. Cospicua, the largest city, has a marina and an interesting contrast between modern buildings and older sites, such as the Firenzuola Fortifications, which date back to 1638.

Finally, there's Senglea, where you can while away a sunny afternoon in the Safe Haven Gardens.

Lower Barrakka Gardens

One of Valletta's 320 historical sites, the Lower Barrakka Gardens offer a lush sanctuary away from the city centre. Quieter than the popular Upper Barrakka Gardens, the lower ones are a peaceful alternative, where you can enjoy in the sights of Fort Ricasoli and the spires of Vittoriosa across the water. Wander through rainbows of flowering plants here, and visit its Roman temple, which is in fact a neoclassical monument from 1810 that commemorates Sir Alexander Bell, a British naval officer who fought the French during the 1798 uprising.

Ta' Betta Winery

Wine production in Malta dates back to the time of the Phoenicians, and continues to receive international acclaim to this day.

As Maltese wine isn't produced in large enough quantities for export, you'll find tipples here which you won't be able to sample anywhere else in the world, so visiting a local vineyard should be high on your list. Ta' Betta is the newest winery on the island, and boasts an outdoor area for tastings overlooking the vineyard and the medieval town of Mdina, also known as the Silent City. Visit for more info.

Walking trails

Both Malta and nearby Gozo offer walkers some of the most amazing wilderness trails anywhere in the Mediterranean, from dramatic cliffs plunging into waves to hidden valleys dusted in flowery meadows.

As you're traversing the landscape, you'll come across many mysterious sights such as tiny chapels hidden in caves, ancient Roman ruins and even the remains of prehistoric settlements. Find set trail routes at, or go off piste on your own adventure.

Gozo Picnics

If you're looking for an exclusive dining experience, look no further than Gozo Picnic. This business offers home-cooked menus made with local produce and flexible dietary options.

They will set up your picnic at an agreed location (think salt pans, beaches, cliff tops, forests), accompanied by your favourite drinks, and can even arrange a pick-up service afterwards for when you're simply too full to move any more. Visit for more information.

Michelin-starred restaurants

Alongside its wild picnic offerings, Malta has been establishing itself as a fine gastronomic hub, serving diverse dishes influenced by the many civilisations that made these islands their home. The archipelago has been championing sustainable cuisine that tips its hat to traditional methods, and this was rewarded earlier this year with the introduction of a Michelin Restaurant Guide, which includes three restaurants awarded Michelin stars: Noni, Under Grain and De Mondion.

You'll find you're spoilt for choice for hotels throughout Malta, but there is also the unique option of staying in converted farmhouses, some of which are more than 400 years old.

They're a gorgeous alternative to the standard hotel-type accommodation, and the majority of them come with their own private pool, stylish decor and all manner of other modern comforts. Many owners can arrange a food delivery to coincide with your arrival, so you can enjoy your own private Maltese paradise away from the crowds if you wish.

Scuba diving

Malta's islands boast more than 100 unique dive sites which are voted as some of the finest diving locations in the world. From coral reefs and submarine caverns to shipwrecks where you can find colourful fish and turtles, dipping beneath the waves here is an experience you'll never forget.

Whether you're an experienced diver or a beginner, the variety of sites available appeal to all levels; even children can get involved, and PADI courses are available for ages ten and up.
