Latest Covid travel guidelines for passengers heading to holiday hotspots

The list of quarantine-free overseas destinations available to visitors from the UK changes weekly. When the idea of 14-day quarantine on passengers returning to the UK was first announced, few people would have thought it would still be in place today. And when travel corridors were introduced in an attempt to kick-start the tourist industry, many holidaymakers thought it would open up a host of favourite sunspots once again.

Official advice remains against all-but-essential travel but some tour operators and airlines are still offering that escape to the sun. Here are the latest restrictions for some popular European destinations.

Spain

Visitors must complete a Spanish government form 48 hours before departure. A QR code is sent by return to produce on arrival.

Restrictions vary from region to region but mask wearing is compulsory in many places and there are curbs on hospitality. Local government in the Balearic and Canary Islands have established their own testing regime, so visitors can be checked on arrival if they have not been tested pre-departure.

Italy

A negative test must be taken pre-departure. If not, these can be provided free of charge at some airports, otherwise there is a cost of around 15 euros with results within an hour.

Face masks are compulsory and there are restrictions on hospitality.

France

Visitors must complete a statement confirming they have no Covid symptoms and have not been in contact with sufferers during the previous 14 days. Strict restrictions on hospitality with bars shut in Paris and restaurants operating a 9pm curfew across the whole country. Bars in locations outside Paris must also close at 9pm.

Masks are mandatory in many cities including Paris.

Passengers must complete an official declaration and locator form up to 24 hours before travel. Shops, bars and restaurants are open but no standing customers are allowed. Mandatory use of a mask at airports and public indoor spaces.

Most resorts exempt from UK quarantine restrictions.

Cyprus

Visitors from the UK need to provide a negative Covid-19 test result on arrival, obtained within 72 hours before travel. All travellers to Cyprus must complete a Cyprus Flight Pass before travelling, available on the Cyprus Flight Pass website. You will be responsible for ensuring your PCR test result is uploaded to Cyprus Flight Pass within 24 hours of your departure.

Use of masks is compulsory in most indoor public spaces.

Portugal

All visitors to mainland Portugal will undergo health screening on arrival. There is a state of 'calamity' decalred by the government but most venues are still open. Alcohol can only be served with a meal in some places.

Face masks are compulsory with gatherings limited to five people. Most UK tour operators still have programmes in Madeira, but before arrival you should: On arrival, you will be subject to health screening.

If you have not uploaded your COVID-19 test result, you will be asked to show it at the airport. If you do not have proof of a COVID-19 test, you can take a test at the airport but remember you will have to self-isolate at your accommodation until you receive your test results. If you test positive, you will have to repeat the test at weekly intervals until the result is negative.
