Tony’s European Vacation

Tony's European Vacation

Australian Broadcasting Corporation

Broadcast: 01/11/2015

Tony Abbott stopped by the Guildhall to give the Margaret Thatcher lecture during his European vacation. RICHARD DI NATALE, GREENS LEADER: I just want to say a few words today about Tony Abbott’s ill-advised international tour. CHEVY CHASE, COMEDIAN (National Lampoon’s European Vacation): Hey, look, kids: there’s Big Ben and there’s Parliament.

ANNOUNCER: My Lords, secretaries of state. MALCOLM TURNBULL, PRIME MINISTER: Tony’s given a speech. TONY ABBOTT, FORMER PRIME MINISTER: All countries that say, “Anyone who gets here can stay here,” are now in peril.

BILL SHORTEN, OPPOSITION LEADER: I’m not sure that Tony Abbott on a victory lap giving a Margaret Thatcher lecture is exactly what Europe needs to solve its problems. CHEVY CHASE (National Lampoon’s European Vacation): Big Ben, Parliament again. MALCOLM TURNBULL: His views are in hot demand everywhere in the world.

TONY ABBOTT: No country or continent can open its borders to all comers without fundamentally weakening itself. CHEVY CHASE (National Lampoon’s European Vacation): I can’t seem to get over to the left, honey. RICHARD DI NATALE: It’s not a healthy thing.

MALCOLM TURNBULL: I’ll leave others to run the commentary on it. PETER DUTTON, IMMIGRATION MINISTER: I thought it was a good speech. NIGEL FARAGE, UK INDEPENDENCE PARTY LEADER: And I think Tony Abbott is absolutely bang on with his comments.

TONY ABBOTT: The imperative to love your neighbour as you love yourself is at the heart of every Western polity, but right now, this wholesome instinct is leading much of Europe into catastrophic error. RICHARD DI NATALE: The only catastrophic error that Europe has made is to give a failed prime minister a platform to espouse his hateful and insular views of the world. CHEVY CHASE (National Lampoon’s European Vacation): It’s amazing!

I cannot get left! TONY ABBOTT: And while Prime Minister, I was loathe to give public advice to other countries whose situations are different. BILL SHORTEN: Tony Abbott’s flown to Europe to lecture Angela Merkel, Hollande in France, to lecture David Cameron in England about what to do with this issue.

TONY ABBOTT: The Australian experience proves that the only way to dissuade people seeking to come from afar is not to let them in. ACTORS (National Lampoon’s European Vacation): (In unison) We know. BILL SHORTEN: Simply saying that Australia’s got all the answers I think isn’t the right way to go.

TONY ABBOTT: Stopping the boats and restoring border security is the only truly compassionate thing to do.

RICHARD DI NATALE: He’s learnt nothing from the fact that he was one of the most short-lived and I’d have to say, one of the worst prime ministers that the country’s seen.
