Transport-handy hotels worthy of more than a stopover

Sometimes location is everything. Often that means a sea view or front-row seats at a watering hole, but there are also occasions when you need to book a hotel for more practical reasons. Many transport-convenient options are faceless hotel chains, but there are a few exceptions if you want to begin or end your travels in luxurious style.

A junior suite at St Pancras Renaissance Hotel

The St. Pancras Renaissance, London1

When the Renaissance had its makeover, no one was quite expecting such a grand transformation. Kings Cross is not an area known for glamour. They get the mix between business and pleasure perfectly right. This is an incredible, luscious hotel, one that s definitely worthy of a quick drink when you ve got an hour to kill before jumping on a late afternoon train to Paris. If you re lucky enough to spend the night here, a mid-week stay will cost you from around 289. Just don t spend all night drinking cocktails at the Gilbert Scott bar and miss your early morning wake-up call.

Rough Luxe, London2

A little down the road from St Pancras is Rough Luxe, one of the most surprising boutique hotels that London has to offer. It s a neat idea the hotel itself is basic but elegant and you pay for the extras that will posh up your stay. Fancy art on your walls? Better bed linen? Nice red wine in your room? Yep, all yours. But they do have a frustrating minimum stay on a lot of the rooms (some as many as three days) so you might have trouble finding a room for a quick stopover.

Citizen M, Paris3

The Citizen M hotels are a budget design offering and they do a very good job. They re a bit like the Ikea of the hotel world they look a bit boxy from the outside but there are some really strong contemporary style elements in there. And they often have a pretty decent bar and a comfy bed. The Citizen M Charles de Gaulle is right on the doorstep of the airport, so it s the ideal stopover before you get on that early morning flight home.

Nu Hotel, Milan4

Nu Hotel is located just a few minutes from Linate Airport the second largest airport to the city. It s also on the Metro, so Nu is a great option for exploring if you have a couple of days. While not a super fancy hotel, the clean lines and lots of white space make the rooms look bigger than they are. It s a great option if you re not in town for very long.

Hotel Ambasciatori, Florence5

The train station in Florence is a big deal. It s not that the city isn t exciting enough for a long holiday, it really can be. But it s a small (perfectly formed) city and after four or five days you might find yourself getting itchy feet. Hop on a train to Rome first thing in the morning and you ll be there in time for lunch. Or just head out into Tuscany for a bit of a ramble about. Italian trains are whizzy and cheap; make the most of it with a stay just a stones throw away from the station.

Barcelo Sants, Barcelona6

They claim that this is the best connected hotel in Barcelona and they might just be right it s located inside Barcelo Sants station. It s been recently refurbished (and it was definitely a much needed lick of paint) and along with sprawling views of the city, it now it looks like a futuristic space hotel, making it one of the most popular hotel choices in the Catalan capital.

Hotel Amigo, Brussels7

Not only is Hotel Amigo perfectly located within walking distance of the train station, it s also one of the loveliest hotels in the city.

The station is actually a 15-minute walk away from the action so a handy hotel is a welcome relief if you re getting off the Eurostar with your luggage. And since you re here, you might as well hop on the train to the beautiful spires of Bruges or hip Antwerp. That s if you can bear to get out of that cushiony bed
