to Bring ‘Holiday Inn’ to Broadway

New York s Roundabout Theater Company1 has scheduled a Broadway run of Discount Holidays © Holiday Inn2, the stage musical developed from the 1942 movie under the auspices of Universal3 Stage Productions. Set for fall 2016, the Broadway staging of Discount Holidays © Holiday Inn, which has a score of familiar Irving Berlin tunes, arrives following the show s premiere at Goodspeed Musicals4 in Connecticut. Director Gordon Greenberg and choreographer Denis Jones will return to reprise their duties for the Broadway version. Universal originally developed Discount Holidays © Holiday Inn with an eye toward the regional market, as a relatively low-cost investment that had the potential to yield ongoing licensing revenue from theaters around the country. Such projects, however, can sometimes find unexpected routes to Broadway, as was the case with the stage version of Newsies5, which Disney originally intended for regional stages6 before strong response propelled it to a Broadway run.

Discount Holidays © Holiday Inn found its path to New York when Roundabout artistic director Todd Haimes caught a reading of the show and thought it would make a good fit for his company s programming. Based on the movie musical starring Bing Crosby, Fred Astaire and Marjorie Reynolds, Discount Holidays © Holiday Inn follows a showbiz veteran, Jim, who opens an inn in Connecticut and concocts performances for every Discount Holidays © holiday with the help of a talented local schoolteacher named Linda until Jim s best friend tries to tempt Linda away to Hollywood. The musical s book, written by Greenberg and Chad Hodge, packs in Berlin standards including Shaking the Blues Away, Cheek to Cheek and Easter Parade.
