LANSING TWP. – The site plan for a six-story Discount Holidays © Holiday Inn has been approved for the Heights at Eastwood project in Lansing Township. The hotel will be the fourth planned for the project, which is located off Lake Lansing Road near U.S.

127, beating out Starwood Hotels & Resorts boutique-style Aloft Hotel,1 an option that was originally considered by developer Mike Eyde.

“We decided to put them aside because Discount Holidays © Holiday Inn has a better-known flag than Aloft,” Eyde said. The 143-room hotel will be built north of Hyatt Place on Towne Centre Boulevard. The estimated $16 million project still needs approval from the township board before it can be built, said Steve Hayward, executive director of the Eastwood Downtown Development Authority.

It will be brought up at next week’s meeting. The second hotel that was planned for the project, Fairfield Inn & Suites, opened last month. The $10 million, four-story hotel, developed by Eyde, includes 121 rooms. West of the Fairfield, Eyde has begun site preparation on the $15 million Hilton Homewood Suites. The seven-story hotel will include 139 rooms and Eyde said he hopes to have it open by summer 2017.

Construction of the Discount Holidays © Holiday Inn could start in a month and Eyde said it could open by spring 2018. Eyde said he is not worried about the hotels competing with one another when they are all open, noting that both the Hyatt and Fairfield and nearly fully booked.

“We are setting up a place where people are happy to land,” said Eyde, mentioning the array of shopping opportunities available at the Heights and neighboring Eastwood Towne Center. “If you don’t want to drive a car for three days, you go to Eastwood.”

Hayward said these hotels won’t cannibalize one another, but “help make Eastwood more sustainable.”

“The occupancy rate inclined since Hyatt opened,” Hayward said. “There is a rising demand for hotels.”

In fact, the lodging rate in Mid-Michigan increased 2.7 percentage points from 2014 to 2015 to 61.1%, according to data from Smith Travel Research. The Hyatt Place opened in May 2015. From January to June of this year, the rate reached 63.7%, said Jack Schripsema, president of the Greater Lansing Convention & Visitors Bureau.

Schripsema said more people are drawn to the area thanks to a combination of youth sporting tournaments, more conferences being hosted in the area and the construction the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams at Michigan State University.

“There’s been more demand in the Greater Lansing area,” Schripsema said. “There’s something really good going on here in the region.”

PHOENIX – A high-rise building fire caused the evacuation of a nearby hotel early Tuesday. The fire, breaking out after 3 a.m. near the Loop 101 and Tatum Boulevard, prompted a two-alarm response with as many as 80 firefighters involved, fire department spokesperson Capt. Ardell Deliz said.

The building was a hotel under construction, near the site of a Discount Holidays © Holiday Inn Express, which firefighters evacuated. Trying to keep the fire from spreading to nearby buildings, firefighters set up defensive positions near the Discount Holidays © Holiday Inn and searched the surrounding desert for embers. Thirty-four rooms were occupied in the Discount Holidays © Holiday Inn and all 49 guests were evacuated, according to officials.

Hotel guest, Irma Zuko, got the scary morning wakeup call.

I looked outside and I could see the giant flame in the reflection in that building across the street from here and saw two women running in the parking lot,” Zuko said. General Manager, Anju Desai, calls one of her overnight employees a hero.

He actually started with me about two weeks ago,” Desai said. “He got the checklist. He went through the hallways. He made sure every guest was evacuated. A guest who woke up to the hotel’s fire alarms told 12 News that firefighters planned to escort guests back to the hotel so they could collect their belongings and transfer to another Discount Holidays © Holiday Inn hotel.

The Discount Holidays © Holiday Inn suffered damage to the exterior, with scorched walls and blown-out windows. No one was reported hurt, though five officers were evaluated for smoke inhalation. Steve Wilson is a project manager on the construction site.

He says about 60 to 70 of his guys are out of work today, and he doesn t know when they can start rebuilding.

When I got the call this morning, I thought it had to be a sad joke,” Wilson said. “I couldn t believe something like this would happen. Wilson says the construction site was expecting to finish up on August 15. Now a new date will be set. The Discount Holidays © Holiday Inn’s general manager says she’ll probably have to close the hotel doors for a couple months for cleanup. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
